Earl: My opinion of him has now gone down

I've always been a fan of Earls brilliance, but watching him right now on BCn, has made me lose a lot of respect. He just isn't even trying, gets up and misses ball-in-hand shots, hasn't bothered to even acknowledge Ralph Souquets play, doesn't know when it's his shot, etc. He turned in one match an enthusiastic supportive crowd against him. That crowd of spectators includes me.
Maybe he shouldn't be in the hall of fame. Steve Mizerak is watching the match, someone Earl obviously respects, and aside from the occasional brilliant run, he isn't really trying....
Ralph is on the hill as of this writing. Let's see if Earl wakes up...

He constantly complains about people moving in the line of his shot, yet I am seeing him talk to people behind him when Ralf is at the table! Really bad etiquette.

Unfortunately for you, AZB is the world capital of Earl apologists. I've lost count of how many times people post that because he's a great and often entertaining player, that we shouldn't judge him harshly. Others suggest that because he's a decent guy when not playing a match (and I quickly admit he's always been nice to me), that this should weigh in his favor.

I agree with you 100%. There's no room for this kind of behavior in the pro ranks. Same old Earl. One of the all time best AND one of the all time worst.

I am one of the Earl apologists of the past but he really is loosing my interest due to his antics far outweighing his performance on the table. I have old accustats of the old Earl who had fire and extreme drive to win. The Earl that played today showed the skill is still buried in there but it is hidden under a tremendous amount of low self confidence and ZERO heart. He is scared to actually try and win because if he actually tries and he still looses then he proves to himself and the world that he cannot play like he used to. He can sleep soundly tonight knowing that he did not give it his all and therefore Souquet never "really" beat him. Earl has gone from being a fierce competitor with huge killer instinct to being a giant chicken shit scared to give it his all and fail.

He might as well quit if he is going to spend the rest of his career giving far less then 100% and relying on sharking and getting his opponent to shoot bad in order to win a match. He used to be a top performer, he still has all the skills but he has lost ALL his heart.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,t.

a very interesting and very plausable take.

another could be an all or nothing attitude, with frustration getting the better part of him............like duran's quit against sugar ray.

 Me and a buddy of mine was talking about Earl not very long ago, and we both agreed that he sometimes seems like he is about ready to off the deep end. I hope not, but you never know. Beatle.........

After I played Earl for the first time last weekend and he sharked me I said to him "you don't need to do that stuff, you are a great player and I respect you, you should offer me that same respect". Yes he's been great since as he was after he turned the match around - but still! It is a shame but I hope he sorts it all out.

I gave up on Earl after last years Skins tournament when he hit a ball with his cue after hitting the cue ball, it was very obvious but the ref didn't see it since he was momentarily behind Earl. Everyone in the crowed seemed to turn on Earl and few said something and I think Charlie Williams said something to Earl and all good ole' Earl would say was the ref didn't see it. Luckily Charlie Williams went on to win.

Maybe Earl has something in common with the new show "my name is Earl" :D

He complains about a lot of things and then goes on to do those same things and worse.

Karma is a somnabitch, maybe it's catching up to Earl and he needs to make a list :D lol

not to be funny but what happened there was a good thing because for one some people including myself expected earl to turn around and say I fowld the ball to the ref but instead he made believe nothing happened and everything was ok but it goes to show you that the ref wasn't doing his job and if earl dosn't say anything there is nothing charlie could do about it.also it's a story that is going to be talked about for years and years down the road and right now if that didn't happen we wouldn't be bringing this up now bullshit makes the world go around and earl created some more buy doing what he did, remember the ref wasn't doing his job :D

Really good post, Celtic! Earl seems burned out. He really should take a couple of years off from playing to get himself straightend out. If he keeps this up, people will just talk about his antics and not of his great play on the table, eventually tarnishing his career. Just remember, till this day he has been passed over for entrance into the billiard hall of fame, because of the person he is and not of his accomplishments.

Yeah that's what did it for me too. I'm not a big fan of Charlie Williams, but that was just ridiculous. That was a new all time low for Earl.

That's bullshit. Ref doing his job or not, Earl should have been man enough to call such a blatant foul on himself. He's lucky it was at a tournament and there was a ref, somewhere else might have gotten him his ass kicked inside out in an alley.

you would think ...

That Earl was smart enough to know the
cameras were on the table and even if the
referee didn't see it, all who were watching did...

Integrity is like trust, it only takes a few seconds
to lose, and you can spend the rest of your life
trying to get it back ... and never do completely.

But, IMO, a good player and gambler too, you would
be hard pressed to find one that has been 100%
absolutely honest in all situations. It's like trying
to find someone who has never sinned, isn't it,
no matter how many profess they have.

Maybe, the new slogan needs to be,
"In God I trust, all others require a referee on the
right side of the table".

I have said from the get go that Earl is a phenominal player and champion. However, just because you're good at something doesn't mean you can't be an asshole. I've watched Earl in person play and have been appalled at his poor sportsmanship. I've heard people say that he's a real gentleman off the table. I'm sorry but I beg to differ. When you see him be an asshole at the table, guess what, that's the real him. You put the veneer on when everything is cool but when the pressure is on, the veneer is off as well.

......But Charlie saw it and the totally incredulous look on his face said it all.

All he did was kinda shake his head in disbelief though.

Makes me wonder if he wears those safety glasses because he expects something to come flying his way.

Isn;t early suppose to be a decent golfer?

Now I understand why. He probably doesn't count all the bad swings and out of bound shots because the "referee" didn't see them.

He is a disgrace to this sport. In other sports, when other players break down and either throw in the game or essentially do it through their actions, a governing body penalizes them and fines them..in pool..they get another invite to a big championship..ridiculous.

Hi Folks,

A couple of years ago, I posted a comparison of Earl with Dale Earnhart. Each was sometimes both loved and hated by the same fans. Both received multiple "second" chances after doing despicable things to competitors. It seems in our new world order, cheating and getting away with it are just another part of the game. An old friend summed it up perfectly, "you snooze, you lose"! :(
