earl spanked 5-0 in local tourney

poolmouse,
Huh? "My money is on joey "K" anytime he matches up with the (once) great Earl."
I've met Joey a couple of times. I like him an awful lot. He is a very good player and shows signs that his game is on the upswing. I wish him all the very best.
But...you would take Joey Korsiak over Earl Strickland "ANYTIME HE MATCHES UP WITH EARL STRICKLAND???
I mean no disrespect to you and certainly none to JK, but I personally think your dislike for Earl has severly clouded your judgement.
You mean in a race to 50? A "10 ahead set" The 6 time World 9 Ball Champion, 5 time U.S. Open 9 Ball Champ and on and on...is now a bum???
I strongly disagree with you. I suspect many others will as well.

i guess you had to be here to witness earl's classic anti-social behavior. when a local player steps up his game, a true champion doesn't whine and carry on like the (once great) earl did.

george played great pool. a true champion would have congratulated george...instead, he acted like he missed his scheduled nap and needed to vent against his opponent DURING the match. george ignored him and went on to sweep the (once great) earl.

nobody wants to put down a champion (present or former) but when you act like a jerk, you get the reputation of being a jerk. george got his 15 minutes today. earl cemented his reputation of having no self control or self respect.

Incredibly disrespectful tone to this thread. I think it's a shame that a great player has found such hard times. Seems like the LEAST we, as fellow players, owe him is silence. Why not just leave the guy alone.

the disrespectful tone propagates the poolroom when earl loses it. earl could have shown some class. he chose to be rude, condescending and disrespectful. for that, he gets the same in return. i lost my respect for (the once great) earl the pearl strickland today. i'm not sure he'll ever get it back.

I'm no basher, but Earl does seem to ask for it. His attitude and everything don't exactly endear him to me, or to many others, I suspect. Seeing someone with his personality and style get a whooping every once in a while is probably a good thing, not only for him, but also for others who may be up and coming. Treating people badly, as unfortunately he often does, isn't good for anyone.

OK, I got that. Something happened that made Earl "go off" and he became "negative". Something happened to YOU (you witnessed and or heard Earl's negative behavior) and so YOU "go off" and become "NEGATIVE". OK for you but not Earl, right?
Anyway, back to my original question to you from my previous post...and I quote...

And for the part about "nobody wants to put down a champion", from your posts in this thread it looks to me that you relished putting him down.

Give the man a break

I don't know if it's true but I heard Earl went through a bad divorce and
it put a slump in his game .Now how many of us have let a bad relationship
mess with our heads . I know I had a hard time with leagues for a few weeks
over a doozy of one . I am just a recreational player ,I could only imagine
trying to keep it together with the rep that Earl has . If and when he bounces back look out

A reflection on Earl

I agree that we just need to leave Earl alone. The guy obviously has some mental issues when he plays these days. He comes from a time when he was the number one player and is slowly facing his last few good years of pool. That and his personality type obviously aren't a good mixture in this day and age of his Earlism. I met the man when i was a kid at the age of 14 or 15, and he invited me to go out to dinner with him, which i regret not taking him up on it. I spent two days around him at a trade show in atlanta and during that time he talked to me alot about his views on pool, mostly cause I was the aspiring pool player alot of kids are at that age when they fall in love with the game. He had excellent advice, which included getting educated, working hard, and being realistic about what can be achieved in this great sport we all love so much. It should be noted, that he complimented many fellow players. Earl isn't a bad guy, he deserves are thoughts and prayers to help him in his ongoing battle with himself. JMO

Exactly. Good post. And while I'm on this subject, I wonder if this isn't another reason that pool is so disrespected. Even so called "fans" can't help themselves from putting down even the all time greats. Does anyone remember when he was winning all those World Championships for the USA? Or helping every Mosconi Team he was on to play that much better? How much more can a man be expected to do and still get so little respect? Let me guess the rebuttle..."He don't respect nobody else blah blah blah" 95% of what Earl does is positive for the game. 95% of the posters here are civil and can be even if we disagree on something. 5% can't be reasoned with. I need to figure out how to work the "ignore" list feature on this time honored forum.

Wait and see, Earl will win a major tournament again soon...

I would tend to disagree with you Roy. Earl seems to be fading fast, almost in free fall. Like you, I would love to see the Earl of old, but we may never see his like again.

.....I will take Joey K Vs Earl in a race to 50 for the forseeable future. In his present mental state, Earl is the underdog to most anyone who can play.

.. AND BTW-What is Earl doing up there in yankeeland?

While I don't make it a habit of betting on other people, I think you and the Mouse guy (no slight meant as I have been just glancing at this thread) and anyone else who thinks JoeyK can beat Earl, SHOULD be able to make a huge score if you put up the money. (no slight to JoeyK either, besides he's got a great name)

I would imagine that this could be FAR BIGGER than the Orcullo - Yang money king match up.

Earl has more talent in his little finger than most talented players have when they shoot with both hands and are in dead stroke. He may be on tilt right now, but we all know every pinball machine when the game goes on tilt and the ball HITS THE BOTTOM of the playboard, and then the ball is shot back to the plunger and the game continues. The only time the game is over is when you run out of balls.

For Earl, he will continue to play and find a way to win. An old timer in the Bay Area, Rusty Jones, who was a very good player years ago once told me "if you ever get out of stroke just go find someone you can beat."

That's how it is with pool, the more folks you beat, the better you will play and the more confidence you will get. As Earl takes down the great guns of today his stroke will return, and is our memory so short that we forgot EARL THE PEARL beat the great Efren in a race to 100 in 9 ball in Hong Kong a few years back but lost the race for it was a race to 120 games.

The PEARL will return to glory, and he may very well say "I'm BACK."

george rodriguez, an up and coming player, whipped/spanked/pounded the great earl strickland 5-0 in the wednesday evening local tournament at master billiards in sunnyside queens, new york. george played great pool.

I was there and I wouldn't call it a "spanking". More like a REALLY fast, Good start. Had it been a race to 9 or 11, I think Earl would have won. He was obviously the more gifted player.

Earl said THE EXACT same thing tonight. After his matches he kept several of us entertained with stories of early days (from age 11) on the road. HE HAS SOME GREAT STORIES. People where laughing so hard you couldn't hear the subway passing. Someone asked him, "Earl, what can you say about running 11 racks?" He replied "It was the luckiest thing I ever saw". I asked him what rack did he think he had a chance and he replied rack number 6. He also said he was actually trying for 8 racks, since that had a 50k bounty. He didn't think 11 was on the cards.

Well, if Earl was to disguise himself lastnight and none of us knew who he was... he coulda got action with a bunch of us lastnight. Right now Joey would be robbing the man.

According to the scuttlebutt on this site, in the recent past, Earl has:

Gotten divorced
Lost his long-time sponsor
Undergone surgery

Who of you here would claim that your game wouldn't deteriorate in similar circumstances?

Earl will get silence from me (and most of us) when he decides to start giving it in return to his opponents/fans/audience/self.

I do not attribute his mental state or his playing ability to any of the above. Nearly every pro player has personal demons to deal with, and some have NO sponsor. And yet they manage to play at their highest level. Pool is a no excuse game.
