Earl Strickland vs Steve Mizerak 1983

Gotta love that gold cloth with the big decal in the middle. Nice to watch Earl in his pre-psycho days. What a talented player. Still is, just a lot nuttier.

Ah.....the days before low deflection shafts were invented but somehow
they were able to pocket balls. Weird concept. They must have suffered horribly.
Funny you mention that. By that time Bob Meucci was speaking openly(and in his catalogs) about deflection and how his cues reduced it. The effortless action you could get with those cues was pretty impressive.

Earl had those antics back then too. Commentators said he broke a cue over his knee earlier in that tournament.

And good lord, why the puke yellow/orange cloth? Lol

Yes, the sales pitch starts early....

For some reason everybody looked older back in the '80s. I think it had something to do with hairstyle and fashion

But Earl looks younger than he is in the video.
That's the point I think he was making.

I'd be more inclined to think it has something to do with the diet.
You're looking at good vs. bad diet when you compare both players....

Wow remember watching this like yesterday! Love bud commercial, days when budweiser tasted good.

Regardless of what you think of Earl, when you see him playing like that, it is a thing of beauty. I have seen him run 9 games in a row, and it was amazing to watch. He was kind and personable while he shot, and talked to me the whole time, either about his personal life or about what he was doing on the table. I guess that experience has kept me a defender of him, although I sometimes wonder about how his anger came about. His ability can't be disputed, however.

Different players from different eras that overlapped. This was a time of transition, the passing of the torch in some ways. I never caught the fan bug for Earl anyway. I was more a Sigel and Varner watcher. Not that I don't recognize and respect his ability. I have also always been a big Mizerak fan. I do wish he had taken better care of himself, his game declined too early and we lost him too early. He was only 61.

At this point Mizerak was winding down and Earl was just getting started. Miz was a straight pool player and famously played a Balabushka for decades. Earl played Meucci and then anything with a tip on it that he could do strange things to with duct tape, and I have always seen him as more of a 9 ball player.

Curious:
Did Earl ever beat Mizerak in straight pool?

I believe that Earl does hold a bigger straight pool high run than Mizerak.

Amazing to watch these old matches.
