Earl "The Glove" Strickland

I don't want to start an Earl bashing thread...

Why was Strickland wearing a glove on his grip hand on during the Taiwan Tournament? I've never seen that one before....

Jim

For some reason known only to Earl, he has started wearing that glove. He says it hepls him play better and will not play without it.

While in Chicago at the MidWest Expo I noticed that Earl had tape (like tennis racket tape) on his cue from the butt sleeve to the forearm. Any particular reason for that? That doesn't really say much about him endorsing Cuetec! Just curious why he did that to his perfectly fine playing cue!

Yeah, I saw it too. Several years ago I asked him about that. Aparently he is his own cuemaker and just rebuilds the cue the way he thinks it should hit. ???

Bob tells me that he made the butt like that because on long draw shots, almost table length, he was able to draw the ball back very easily with control.

I don't think anyone can speak for Earl and his reasons, but a lot of guys wrap that kind of tape around the grips of their putter in golf to build it up and make it fatter. They do that in order not to be as flippy and wristy as they might be with a thin grip. Maybe Earl is developing a taste for a fatter feel in his grip and it does something positive for his stroke.

I also noticed the glove on his right hand in the pictures from Taiwan. I have two pair of those gloves but I don't use them for pool.....just for 'light' winter gloves (they're good for holding beers when I go to the Steeler games :D ). They are the Nike Speedtac II football gloves for wide receivers, running backs etc.

Hi Eydie: I think your husband knocked me out of the Open Amateur at Valley Forge in 2003 (2nd round) Sorry to say I didn't play very well and I think he beat me 5-2, 5-3. Hopefully next time I'll give him a better match :) I also remember seeing him play this year and I seem to remember him going pretty far (Sweet 16 or so??). Congrats to Bob!

Goooooo Steelers....where do you play up there? I grew up in Ambridge and still go there at least once a year. Beaver Co. doesn't seem to have many good rooms at all any more, not like when I was young. I'll go to Franklin sports in Aliquippa and just play on those super old gold crowns for practice, otherwise to Bridgeville or Pittsburgh.

Hi Jim,

There are several players here in the Northeast that use the stroke hand glove as well. Their explaination is: They sweat alot. They slip stroke. As far as sweating, have you ever shaken hands with someone who sweats alot? It must be very difficult to control the butt with so much moisture on their hands. What kind of rhythm can you develope when you're constantly wiping your hands. I can understand. I'm not familiar with any top players who slip stroke but we have (had) at least three playing that I'm familiar with.

As with the tape on his fingertips and colored glasses, Earl must feel he has some advantage. He is willing to try most any aftermarket device whether or not it actually helps someone elses game. If he feels it helps his game, that enough for him.

I am cool with any kind of glove. I use one for my bridge hand because you guessed it... my hands sweat a lot. If the top players start using them, I would feel a lot better than I do now. I am very self conscious about it and feel like a geek when I wear a glove. I have noticed that women do not seem to have this problem... hmmmm.

Hi drivermaker!,

It just so happens that for the past 6 years or so I HAVE LIVED in Beaver County! I live in the town of Beaver! I really don't get to play all that much pool anymore since I have a 6 yr old girl and a 2 yr old girl :( I mostly just play in the Beaver Valley Club Pool League on Monday nights. If a Viking tournament comes around I'll play in those (I finished 5th in the Viking Amateur tournament the day the Steelers lost to Baltimore--not too bad for almost never playing during the summer -- it was held at Mr. Pockets in Penn Hills). Once in awhile I'll go over to Breakers in Dormont (still the best pool room in Pittsburgh---did you know that Paul Mottey bought the place??). And I have my two "pool trips" a year: one to Youngstown in February for a 4-man team 8-ball tourney and the other to Valley Forge in March for the Open Amateur 9-ball tourney. My family comes first but I'm still a pool addict

I grew up in Turtle Creek playing at Pinky's Pool Parlor (which was the hippest/most action pool room back in 70's, early 80's--way before Breakers was around). I've been transplanted (bought a house) in Beaver County because my wife is from Center/Monaca and her mom still lives there. Actually Turtle Creek and the whole Eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh is going down hill. I don't miss it, my dad's moving to Florida soon and there's really nothing over there for me anymore.

But there is not much action or even any good pool rooms in Beaver County. Luckily, I belong to the Fort MacIntosh club which has 5 9-ft Gold Crowns to practice on. I go there when I get a spare moment and pretend I'm playing in the WPC :p I'm 46 yrs old now but I'll never give up the dream.

Anyway, how can you live without the most famous of all pizzas from Ambridge: Frank's Pizza & Pizza House (i.e. Police Station) I swear my family gets 1 of those pizzas at least once a week!

Anyway, my friend, I'll drink a beer for you when I go to the Eagles game next week. I gave up the New England ticket because it's a 4:15 p.m. game. I only go to 1:00 p.m. games because I start drinking about 8:15 a.m. :p If I get home by 5:00 p.m. I can still take care of the kids and help my wife (provided I stop drinking by halftime :D )

Let me know if you have any other questions about Pittsburgh/Beaver County etc.

Kind Regards

D'maker,
I grew up (late 60's, early 70's) playing at Cue & Cushion in Bridgeville, and at Sub's pool hall (dive) in Bridgeville. Did you ever happen on either of those places (if you did, and escaped in one piece, you are well ahead of many)???

Yeah, I heard Mottey bought the place and spends a lot of time there now, but I haven't gone there yet.

I have a hard time living without the pizza. When I make my annual trek to Ambridge and stay for a couple of weeks, I always pig out on their pizza at least a couple of times during each week. :D Ummmm ummmm!!

Drink 4 beers for me...even though it's a 4:15 game, I don't know how you could give THAT ticket up. I just hope it's on TV where I am.

In the late 60's early 70's I was gone and living in the Wash. DC area, probably pounding on Don Purdy but we never even knew it at the time. Prior to that, which was from '60 to '66 I played in a real dive right in Ambridge called Benny's, in Aliquippa (there were 2 at the time), in Conway, Rochester, and right in the heart of downtown Pittsbugh where they had a lot of action always going on at any time of day. Benny's was a super training ground. Card games went on in the back room 24/7 and pool up front with all the local bookies, card sharks, hustlers, cons, and derelicts. It sounds just like the places you're talking about. I never played in Bridgeville until about 6 years ago and I don't know the name of it. It's Jimmy Marino's place, I think he won the US Open 9 ball championship a good number of years ago. It's filled with a young college crowd on weekend nights now. Incredibly, some real good looking hotties go there together in groups or on dates and the place stays packed. Surprised the hell out of me.

Earl is wearing the glove on tonight's telecast of the World summit of Pool.
