Earl wins!!!!

Nice! Too bad it had to be Archer. Earl made a really good point at the end about some guy cheering after he missed: "No one does that in golf"

Earl said, "I just shit on myself and your cheering" or something close to that effect. It was hilarious. I wish Archer would have won. He had it, had it not been for the leave he had on his last 2 balls. He hits that last shot a little softer and he was out...

From my memory earl missed the ball that skidded and a combination on a ball in the stack after a long safety battle toward the end of the match. Both guys played great, awesome pattern play by two of the best players ever. How many matches do you get to see where both guys run over a hundred balls. Thank you to TVMike and Mark Cantrill for making it right with the free stream today, I paid the 25 dollars yesterday and was praying things would go good today. Hopefully PPV streams get figured out better both for the viewers and the people bringing fans great pool.

You're right about that! After Earls miss on the 1 ball, Johnny proceeds to run 24 balls and misses shape on his break ball (needing that ball and one more) and has to play safe into the rack. Earl plays a safe and Johnny scratches trying to play safe (losing a point).
Earl closes it out from there!!

Interesting. As a huge fan of Earl I am really glad that he won. I honestly thought Johnny would take the straight pool though. So much for that.

Too bad I missed it... sounds like great playing on both sides. I know Earl is a 400 ball runner, so I figured he would be a slight favorite in the straight pool.

Holy crap...I had to leave in the middle of, what I thought was, Johnny running out the set. The fact that Earl won really is a testament to his abilities on the table.
So where did Johnny's run end? I think he was at about 114 when I had to shut it down.

His run ended at 173, I believe. The total run was 144. Earl then ran 138 and had to play a safe.

Wow, thanks for that. I honestly didn't think Earl had a shot the way Johnny was playing.

It was even closer...

Yeah I had forgotten that Johnny made the break shot, so it would've been 200-198....

Two shots. I guess that show cases how much more difficult it is to play super strong when the pressure is on.

I honestly expected Earl to run the game out when he was on his 138, of course I expected Johnny to run out when he was on his 144.

sorry

There is news of a tennis player hitting a ball into the crowd towards a man holding a baby. No ones perfect but in earl's case , people just like to pick on him.

I can see how its easy to deal with the crowd in other sports, but they are multi-million doller events. If you're not able to put up with a man's baby for a few million bucks you're out of line. Life should be good when you have millions in the bank. The one time he makes a mistake, he blames it on the crowd.

In pool, that type of crap happens all the time. People will present themselves in a way and act totally different. It seems Earl is one of the few that truly speaks up. I'm sure he gets out of line too, but hey he's right for the most part. You should cheer when someone does something right, not when they make a mistake.
Sorry I disagree. I have watched in person all of the best for the last 16 yrs.and no one cries like Earl. NO ONE!

Awesome talent, but......

First, let me say I didn't get to watch the match, but I'm really impressed that Earl plays straight pool this strong (I'm not surprised, though). He's obviously one of the best 9-ball players to ever live. And Johnny is.....well, he's JOHNNY. Been at or near the top of the game since the very early 90's.

As to behavior, Earl quite frankly disappoints me. He was fiery in his younger days (which I had no problem with), but what I've witnessed from him the last 5-7 years seems more mean-spirited. He's started arguments in matches with some of the most gentlemanly players on tour. Earl demands that others show him respect, so he should be the first to reciprocate. On the issue of fans clapping on a player's miss, I think that is often misinterpreted by the player that misses. Most of the time I've seen that occur, the applause really seemed to be for the incoming player. Granted, in Earl's case, that may not be true.

All that said, I don't know Earl, and I've heard a lot of people say good things about him. I just don't think it helps the sport, the fans, or Earl for him to behave the way he does.

Unless I've missed something recently, the only tennis player I know of that may have done this was Ilie Nastase from Romania, and that would have been in the 70's, maybe even late 60's. Even McEnroe's famous rants were more justified than Earl's. Mac's conflicts were always with umpires or linespeople when they made a bad call. He was a perfectionist, and had a hard time accepting less than that from the officials. He rarely ever directed his anger towards an opponent or the crowd, and he definitely played in front of some VERY hostile crowds.

what was the size of the pockets? I read in the first topic they were like 3 7/8 or something like that. A 144 run on 3 7/8 pockets i think is pretty amazing.. or they changed the table?

Hmmmm

Earl needs to watch more golf if he really thinks that is true.

Um, yeah, I think he watches golf, but plays it even more. Earl is a scratch golfer, not to mention a heck of a tennis player to boot.
