Earl's gimmicks

To start this is not a disrespectful thread.

We all know Earl has tried just about everything in an effort to play better. As it now appears he has gone back to just bearing down and getting in the box, I'd like to know what everyone recalls as his most disasterous/ridiculous efforts. There have been many, but I can only remember a few. Please add, here are a couple I know:

The glasses
The band-aids on his fingers
Ankle weights
Bowler's wrist supports
Tennis club grip (on his cue)

The football helmet really didn't help. :p

I'd rather speculate that Earl was looking to get out of his contract with Cuetec and didn't really believe any of those gimmicks (except for the glasses) would work.

I think so too Greenman. However maybe he saw Tin Cup, when Cheech had Costner do all that goofy stuff to get rid of the "yips"

He was wearing that brace thing for a while. I don't know if it was some sort of bowling apparatus or what, but it didn't look very comfortable to me. Perhaps he had an injury, but it seems that I recall someone saying that he was doing it to try to help his game.

In his early match today he had a glove on each hand and an elbow brace with wrapping and got beat really bad. In his later match today, he still had the gloves on but the elbow brace and wraps were gone and he won. Hard to tell what he's up to.

I remember i think two years ago i was at Cambrige MD for a US open warm-up, and i sat next to earl as i watched him play(i think he was playing frankie hernandez im not sure).

he had a band-aid on each finger of his hands except for his thumb, which i thought was very strange, and the weird wrist strap thing. He was acting real jittery throughout the whole set, and around the fourth game or so missed a pretty easy shot. when he did, he sat down really hard and started muttering to himself, and as he did he tore off several band-aids from his fingers and sat dejectedly until it was his shot.

later on in the set, he had no bandaids on, and was angrily talking to himself inbetween shots.

I also thought it was funny that he had like a 4x8 case all full of the same cue-tecs.

the gloves are'nt a gimmick. the cueing glove especially, they're an amazing invention. the grip glove is logical too, you can have a much lighter grip with a good glove. the glasses would piss me off though - i think they'd get in my way. apparently they help you see edges of objects a bit sharper. not sure the minimal benefits would outweigh the drawbacks though for me personally.

the finger extensions are damn clever though, think how much easier it would be to bridge over a ball with them!

I took some video footage of him in his late game today, but unfortunately run out of battery soon..

Anyway, the hilarious thing was, that he looked like Donald Duck, when there was something on his back, which I thought was some sort of 'belt bag' (I don't know how you call this bag in english, but when you travel it's handy, as you can fit things better than pockets and it's tied with belt so impossible to steal..)

His shirt was not tucked, so the 'belt bag' could not be seen. Just the plum thing.

Afterwards, he took that thing off, and it wasn't a belt bag, but it was some sort of a sport weight - I don't know for what purpose originally, but Earl said it helps his balance at stance, and when he added it in the middle of a second game, he started really play better..

Gave a good result ;)

Seriously, congrats to Earl for a nice win!

Honestly? All Earl needs is an ipod and a set of blinkers.
Hear no evil and see no evil.

I would love to put a mic on Earl and listen to what he has to say to himself,
but I'm more interested to what will his response to himself will be. Would it
be like this?

"Precious!!! My Precious!!! I want my precious 9 ball!!!" :D

I will say this about the glasses. I use them when I go to the shooting range, and I can focus on the targets better, but as for pool? I dont think they would help

Tennis grip

I saw a player this weekend using a tennis club grip on the upper part of his cue. I was told Earl had done it.

This one is so obvious, but it might be overlooked when making the list... One of the gimmicks used by Earl:

The Cuetec cue :D

when he was playing i believe parica in a DCC match and he had a shit load of tape all over his fingers. I looked at that match and said how in the hell is that helping his game

I'd wrap up like a mummy if I could play 1/2 of his speed. Don't think I'd be alone, either.

Rick S.

The belt is worn to help with his kidneys, gives him some support.
