Easy Remove Bumper Question?

I have made cues accept extensions in the end of the butt before, but went bumperless when I did so. I have looked at the 3/8-16 thread bumpers and others, but have not found one that is really suitable for that. The 3/8-16 one that is common out there wants to not hold very snugly and is a little hard to unscrew if you manage to get one that holds.

Does anyone have a bumper that is suitable for that?

I saw a picture of a bumper that was a donut of rubber with a threaded hole in the middle for an extension to screw into........... I don't remember where.... somebody must be making them.

this what i did

at the suggestion of my customer, i used a bumper that attaches with a screw. i put it in the freezer overnight, then cut a 1/2 inch hole in the center. the customer said i could glue it in place, them made the extension with a 1/2 inch wood dowel with a 3/8 by 10 screw in the dowel.

Here is a simple design I did that works perfectly. The insert screws in where the weight screws goes in. The bumper is just held in with double faced tape. The extension can be made with a cup like end that goes over the bumper or it can screw right against the bumper. It works well either way. There is also a slot cut in the insert so it can be removed if you need to get to the weight screw. To take the picture I took out the bumper. Like I said it is in with double faced tape. It has been there for several years without ever falling out. I just cut a new piece of tape and put it back in. The bumper has also been cut down so as not to be so thick to accommodate the length of the extension screw, a 5/16 x 14.

I did a few using a stem bumper similar to the ones Southwest uses with a .625 stem and drilled it like someone mentioned after a time in the freezer. I had bored and tapped the butt with a 3/8" x 16. Made the joint on the extension kinda like a piloted joint so the the bumper would recess into the extension and used a longish 3/8" x16 pin into the butt of the cue. I glued the bumper in with white glue so it could not fall out and get lost. The folks I did this for have been pleased as punch.

a possible solution

I'm a short fat guy so I need the extra reach.
This is my solution. I tried a straight bore but it didn't
seem to hold well. So I made it tighter and under cut it
so it wouldn't be too tuff to install. You can see by the
marks that I get good use out of it. I got the bumpers
from Altas.

oh yeah, thanks, I needed to clean off my drafting table.

I have made a couple of extensions for cues, what I did was to bore a hole big enough for the bumper (southwest style), pressure fit. I then cut a small tenon behind the pin about a 1/2 inch long or shorter, the size of the hole and then drilled for the pin and tapped. The bumper pops out and the mini a-joint on the extension screws right in.

Its strong and will definitely tighten up snug.
