yally said:C'mon Dank! You gotta give them some props for trying to cut on the trade of illegal Ivory! I love the look of that Elephant Ivory, but knowing an animal was killed just for that (other than pre-ban Ivory) is tough knowing there are other choices out there. (ie. Mammoth Ivory)

Danktrees said:i would if that was their actual objective. the only reason why they are doing it now is because there was a report on it that was made public and now the conference at hague specifically targetted ebay. they're not trying to cut the trade of ivory, they're trying to look good in the eyes of its users. they've always had an anti-illegal ivory policy but they never enforced it. they are doing it now cuz people are criticizing them so i dont see why i should commend them for doing it.
also, even tho it was pre-ban ivory, an animal might still have been killed for the ivory lol so i dont see how ur argument holds. if u wanna say it's wrong to kill an elephant for its ivory, i will agree with u, but if u say that and also say that pre-ban ivory is fine then i dont agree with u. if anything, less animals are killed for their ivory now than before the ban. doesnt make it right but at least it's getting better.
as for pre-ban ivory, a lot of it was actually illegal, but then the amnesty on illegal stocks meant that the illegal ivory was made legal and a bunch flooded the market. so i would have to say that pre-ban ivory isnt much better than today's ivory, other than it being "legal" even tho an elephant still had to die for it.
Not sure if you're commenting on my post or not, but I was simply indicating that they DO act on auctions that are deemed inappropriate. Mine is a perfect example. They are doing the right thing by cancelling such auctions so as to protect themselves, but how about a warning before making the entire composed auction disappear as though it neve existed. I now have to write it all over again. Very frustrating!Danktrees said:well u all seem to be under the impression that ebay never had rules against ivory. it's actually in their policy requirements that ivory not be traded unless it was deemed legal. that rule has always been there they just never enforced it (or only enforced it sporatically and with little determination). then some tv report came up about it so now ebay is putting on a small show to repair their rep. they might actually enforce this rule for a little bit but in a few months they will let things slide again.
