Ebay: now the Definitive Source for Billiard Information?

When clicking on the sort for "balls" in the billiards section, the top of the page has some interesting information.

Here is how Ebay says to clean your billiard balls!

How do you clean a pool ball set?

Billiard pool balls are durable, but they are also prone to staining, especially when subject to unclean surfaces or chalk. It is relatively easy to clean billiard balls. All you need is a magic eraser, a sink, a bottle of bleach, a pair of cleaning gloves, a dishrag, a 16-oz cup, and a tub.

Fill the tub with a full cup of water and a full cup of bleach. Clean two balls at a time in the solution for good results. Remember to put your gloves on and roll both balls around in the solution for three minutes.

Once you rinse each pair of balls, wipe them with the magic eraser. You should see a dark-colored film appearing along the front end of the eraser. And, the balls becoming shinner within seconds.

Thoughts?

Wrong in so many ways. You posted on this topic and got a lot of good info. Why would you think any of this is correct? Bleach and a Magic Eraser??? WTF??? Seriously doubt that 'shimmering' would be the end result.

There isn't anything good about that as being useful in taking proper care of Billiard balls.

Always thought it funny to see reviews of ball sets and someone mentions the elasticity of them, as if a person can detect and measure such a thing from a set of aramith balls from home 🙄

HA HA - the only time I think a set of pool balls is elastic is when I make a break shot in 14.1 and I have five open shots after the break :) :)

I don't think any of this is correct at all. Just surprised to see an instructional post on Ebay about how to clean billiard balls with some very unsubstantiated recommendations. I don't see Ebay as a source for information on really ANY subject.

Agreed. Particularly irritating is that there is no way to give Ebay feedback about its stupidity.

Bob this is a very important statement. I dropped selling on Ebay after over 20 years and many hundreds of transactions for the simple reason that customer service went from non existent to punitive. I still maintain a purchase only account because every now and then someone for personal life reasons needs to sell something I need at a very reasonable price. I try to make sure they get as little business from me as is possible.

I don’t know about the bleach, but I’ve been using a magic eraser dabbed in a little denatured alcohol regularly for years to get the nasty miscue scratches off our cue balls, before placing them in our ball polishing machine, with absolutely no noticeable change to the luster on the surface of our cue balls.

I don’t see the problem using a magic eraser. I’m not a fan of bleach in general.

I agree. You just need to make sure its wet. Either water or denatured alc. will work. Bleach? UHHH, no. That will strip the polished surface right off the ball.

Yeah... I've done that before. Had a really grungy old set of the lower model aramith. Bleach turned them an iron rust color which took a ton of work to scrub off. I'm sure the balls were screwed, but they had thick yellow wax on them. The balls actually turned out as playable as a decent bar set, not great, but not unusable. I used them for a several months, then upgraded and donated the old set to the union hall. The balls are still ok, but the bleach does some funky stuff with the phenolic. Makes it very soft until they dry. Not recommended on anything but the worst set of balls and only as a last resort. It might be ok for a filthy chipped up bar set, but don't do it on anything even half way decent.

My hands were cramping for 2 weeks after all the scrubbing it took to get that rust color out. I knew it sounded sketchy, but it was a crappy set that was going to be replaced anyway.

I tried Comet (with chlorine) and got purple balls. I think the chlorine eventually evaporated and they went back to normal more or less.

I'm pretty sure we can conclude that bleach shouldn't touch pool balls you care about! :)

After years of using a magic eraser I recently switched to Aramith Billiard Ball Cleaner ... won't change back, it works much better IMO.

What difference did you find that has you not wanting to go back?

I use Aramith Restore and Aramith Ball Cleaner and wow easily cleans and polish the balls beautifully.
