Danny took the order and I also spoke to Black on the phone. Did I get screwed by Danny and Black on a custom order, who knows. My Rocky reference is correct because I owned a pool room at the time.

When they broke into my truck and stole the cue it was just a bonus. They were after and got a money bag that was behind the seat and also a gun that they may also have been after. I am pretty old and some things I may mis-remember I admit. I am pretty sure about that cue though. Either way it is not important.

Having ordered from Richard in the 90s, I can tell you he is honest, and would never charge four to five times the going rate for his cues. They are pretty valuable today, including the old ones.

As for the rest of this ridiculous episode of "The Untouchables," I can't vouch for any of the characters involved, including DiLiberto or anyone else.

You can't say this thread lacks comedy, even at an absurd level.

Possibly the funniest part was the characters chiming in to put the cue down, hoping nobody else would bid on it. I think it's something like 1600 now.

The popcorn tastes the best when the characters are the Stooges and Bud & Lou.

Adam cases. They are made of pleather. If you search Adam cue case you will see examples of this exact case.

Some knucklehead probably thinks this is a Gus! Could go 4 k. I think the widow is the only one laughing now. Well played lade. Only a hustler says they work 9 to 5....

Immediate observation, Tim Scruggs did very few plain black collar cues in the old days, unless asked to. Very few even asked. But it's a pretty ubiquitous design, could have come from most of those making cues in the late 70s, early 80s. Bill Stroud did a few more plain black collar cues. Reference, see my earlier post. Lot of possibilities here.

Except one: The one where the seller said it may have been a Balabushka-built cue. No.
 
Well, it's either a Black, a Balabushka, or maybe the buyer got butt-scored ?

Richard Black

Not to start any controversy but this is a Rare flat face joint 1975 Richard Black that I have owned since 1987. Not to say that he never used one but I personally have never seen him use that type of weight bolt on his bumper less hoppes. You will also notice in the catalog at the link supplied earlier http://www.jimboarmy.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1010&hilit=richard+black+catalog that the bottom of the butt has a curvature to it that is not apparent in the ebay pics, it is a straighter cut that the catalog and my pics. I agree it screams RB but I am personally not sold it is his work.

Richard's Hoppe model usually had a recessed weight bolt, clearly visible in this 1990 brochure. It's not apparent in the link in the rest of this thread, as the pictures are too head-on. A flat faced weight bolt could have been requested by the original customer.

More Information on The Unknown

A very good friend of my Scott has a Joss West Hoppe that has striking similarities to the cue in question to further reinforce my question if this cue is in fact a work from Richard. What do you think, My belief if that it is in fact a JW.

No, I would say Richard Black, not Bill Stroud. The joint collar rings match Richard's in the 70s, rather than Bill's. I also don't ever recall Bill doing an outside purple veneer, but Richard told me in 1990 that was his standard Hoppe model outside color until it was no longer available.

You could be right wildwood. Pin pics are not that visible but also look off for a Black to me. The thing that surprises me most is that in this market that cue in the condition that it is in would command $1725.00. If it is in fact a Richard Black the cost is higher than I have seen 2 shaft Hoppe's in excellent condition from Richard selling for the past few years.
 
They are both accomplished cuemakers, but I don't generally see Blacks selling for less than Bill's. But I do tend to see fewer Blacks for sale.

And it's WildWing, not WildWood. No offense taken.
