Exile,

Nice wood!!!

Here in the US, a piece 18' x 1.5 x1.5 is about 35.00. If your making cues I would just see how may turning blanks are in there and multiply by 35.00.

That piece could be worth a lot more to someone who turns or carves larger items????

Without cutting it up there is no way to really know its true value. You have some checking in the ends. How deep they go determines the yield you get from the piece. Really old is not always a plus when wood is concerned, as checking and such become much more of a problem. Now if the wood is perfectly preserved then age adds value to cuemakers. For a piece like that that has some checking in it. Inlay slabs and point stock will give you the most dollars worth of usable material. But how long would it take you to go through that much point and inlay stock? I would probably cut the ends off past where the checking ends and use the ends for point and inlay stock and then cut the center into turning squares.

ebony

I think eight dollars a lb. might be less than accurate. You may want to cut it up into smaller pieces and see what you have.. 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 by 12" sells on some sites for thirty bucks if it's jet black,,,you may have a lot of those in that piece...can't tell if it's split anywhere or streaking etc...
good luck, nice find... check Eric, Bell Forest....

By the way, if you sell it , I'm a player for it.. I'm a sucker for nice ebony...

I will sell you all the 1.5x1.5x12" pieces at $30.00 each you wish to purchase. The OP asked what the single piece was worth, my answer is about $8.00lb. Matcase answer that SW would get about 50K may also be correct but, like your answer, implies cutting the piece into smaller parts.

50k and it's yours lol.

Gonna have to wait a few weeks to get it cut at the timber yard as my saws would shit themselves at the site of a lump of ebony like this :)

As it sits is worth less than turned into dowels. Ebony is one of my favorite woods, however, you do not know what it looks like on the inside. I bought some beautiful pieces that appeared to be solid Black until I turned it and then Brown streaks started coming through the Black.:(

If I were you before you ask a value, you should cut it up and turn it!!
