Edwin Reyes aka Bandido shot dead

This is really shocking, what a tragic loss for the pool world.
I hope he won't die in vain, I hope this will trigger the movement to cleanse the Philippines pool world.

Was finally able to open the story. Hope they catch, and give the SOB's JUSTICE!

MANILA, Philippines—Two men posing as employees of a cargo delivery service company shot dead an official of the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP) in his apartment in Quezon City on Saturday morning, the police said Sunday.

Superintendent Gerardo Ratuita, deputy chief of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, identified the victim as Edwin Reyes, 51, of Barangay (village) Masagana in Project 4, Quezon City.

Reyes was the public relations officer of the BMPAP.

Ratuita said the gunmen, who were on a motorcycle, knocked on the gate of the victim’s house at around 10 a.m. Saturday and said they were delivering a cue stick.

One of the men went inside the house carrying a package while the other remained outside.

The alleged delivery man then handed over the package to the victim and asked him to sign a delivery receipt.

As the victim was signing the receipt, the delivery man pulled out a caliber .45 gun, shot him twice at close range, and escaped with his companion.

The victim’s neighbors rushed him to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center, where he died an hour later.

Ratuita said they have yet to determine the motive for the killing.

Wow, this is awful. Thank you Anito for letting us know and letting us in on your feelings in this tough time. I was really looking forward to finally get a chance to meet Edwin next month when I make the trip to Manila. My sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

Sarah

Terrible news

This is terrible news. My condolences go out to his family. I had periodic contact with him after ordering one of the limited edition ER cues. I could tell he was a passionate person. My cue will be one of the unfinished masterpieces.

I know how justice is done in the Philippines, but I know his friends wouldn't stoop that low.
They're all classy individuals and taking one's life won't bring Bandido's life back anyway.

I sure Master Edwin had already said this quote wherever he is right now, "Vengeance will be mine, in this lifetime or the next"

Those are beautiful cues. More masterpieces from the Master. Jimbo has some precious works of art there.

Just wanna update everyone that John has sent me US$525. I have sent an equivalent of Php 24,250 to Linds to be given to Edwin's Family.

Thanx to all the generous donors.

Bravo to John for getting it started.

I hope the officials have not forgotten Edwin was murdered. Is there any news on what the authorities are doing about it?

Unfortunately, none. :(

Filipino pool will never, never, never shine as bright for me after this. NEVER. It's a travesty. If something like this happened in the United States, there would be an investigation to the fullest extent. Shame on the Philippines authorities. Whoever in the pool world it is that wanted to put an end to Edwin 's life should be found and made to pay for his crime.

I also am extremely disappointed -- no, VERY, VERY, VERY disappointed that the rest of the pool world by way of pool websites and print media, et cetera, haven't even acknowledged Edwin's death. It is a loss to the pool world. I see print media articles about players who pass away but NOTHING about Edwin, a pool great who was MURDERED. This is a very noticeable oversight, one which also leaves me speechless and make me wonder WHY.

I am in complete agreement with you Jennie. At the very least acknowledgment and respects should have been paid.

I am truly disappointed and saddened to see that no mention of it was made by AZ billiards on the main website when we lose such a great contributor to the game.

Billiards Digest does have an article on its website (and presumably will have one in its print edition). Here is the web article:

Edwin Reyes Shot and Killed
Apr 21, 2009, 11:36 AM

On Saturday, April 18, Edwin Reyes, a prominent figure in Philippine pool, was killed inside his home in Manila.

Superintendent Gerardo Ratuita, deputy chief of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, reported that two men arrived at the home of Reyes on a motorcycle. One man entered Reyes' apartment, claiming he was there to deliver a pool cue. When he asked for Reyes to sign for the package, the alleged gunman shot Reyes twice at close range, according to Ratuita.

According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the two men escaped while neighbors rushed Reyes to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center, where he died an hour later.

Reyes, no relation to Efren Reyes, was the spokesman for the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP), an organization embroiled in a power struggle with the Billiard and Snooker Congress of the Philippines, the current governing body of pool in the country.

Police have yet to determine the motive for the killing, and there was no evidence to suggest the murder has any connection to Reyes’ role with the BMPAP.

Hey, thanks for sharing that. It makes me feel somewhat better about the pool media in general -- print, broadcast, and Internet -- that somebody remembered Edwin Reyes.

Bravo to Billiards Digest for being brave enough to write something memorializing this great Filipino cuemaker and pool enthusiast who died for wanting transparency in pool in his beloved country of Philippines.

It makes me wonder, John, about how long the reach is of the influence that the pool organizations in the Philippines have.

Well, when your host is on the other side of the fence in opposition to the person who was murdered then it's probably touchy for you to get too deeply into the subject. Journalistic integrity however would seem to dictate that at least Edwin's passing should have been "newsworthy" enough to get at least a generic paragraph.

I agree completely. What happened to the "please share with us all your beautiful cues, Edwin" (from the site owner when Edwin made his appearance several years ago) to absolute silence on his murder.

And then, I think the day after, one of the moderators starts a thread about T-shirt designs. Oh joy!

I have never seen such a blatant display of bias, and complete lack of class or respect as displayed by the owners and moderators of this site after Edwin's death.

Their lack of formal acknowledgment is their shame.

Steve
