I'm at the US Open 9-ball tourney right now, so I wanted to report on my discussion with Efren Reyes on snooker. I'm trying really hard to stay away from the Ronnie thread, since it's degenerated from the initial question raised by Pink. This thread is not meant to be a snooker vs. pool debate. It's only a "Efren and snooker" thread. Hopefully, this answers and confirms any questions or rumors on Efren's snooker play.

Fred: How often do you play snooker?
Efren: Never
F: Are there snooker tables in the Philippines?
E: No. I don't know. I don't play. Manalo plays. I don't
F: Why not?
E: I don't like the snooker.
F: Why not?
E: I don't know.

F: I heard you played against Jimmy White and Ronnie O'Sullivan some snooker
E: I didn't play Jimmy snooker. We played regular pool. 9-ball... I play Ronnie snooker. He gave me 25 points. We played for 500 or 1000.
F: Race to what? Five?
E: Per game. 500 or 1000 per game.
F: Dollars or pounds?
E: No. Whatever Bankok money is.
(ED: someone give the conversion. this could be 20 cents for all I know).
(ED2: I checked. 12 to 24 USD. LOL!!! Okay, they weren't playing for anything)

F: Did you win?
E: (Big smile... cocked head... no answer)
F: Did you have any centuries
E: Yes. I don't know how many.In the tournament they gave me an award (he points to his wrist) for fastest century .

(I didn't press this, since it answered my question, but I had no idea what "fastest" meant. I assumed he meant "first of the tournament)

F: How did you do in the tournament? Did you win?
E: I left early. There was no money. Only awards.

At this point, I was a little surprised, but in retrospect, I'm speculating that he and his backers thought there was prize money. But, it's still a surprise that he would start a tournament and then leave.

F: Did you ever consider playing snooker full time since there's more money in it?
E: No. I don't like the snooker (he shakes his head). And the snooker players, I can't beat them.

I know some will point to only a couple of points in all of this, so I highlighted them as important.

Thanks for asking and sharing.

Efren gets spotted by Ronnie for gambling $20 a game (What was he afraid of? Losing $20?) Efren admits he can't beat the snooker pros.

I think this puts an end to our heated argument.

Good to see we have a bit more information now about what happened.

Thanks to Fred "Roaming Reporter" Agnir

a good bit that isn't highlighted here that is of interest

Efren makes it plain that these comments are based on almost no experience playing snooker. From what I have seen his current style of play wouldn't lend itself well to snooker. However, I'd bet a pretty that if he decided tomorrow that he wanted to play snooker, six months from now he would be among the best.

Yes, all those people who thought 9-ball players play better snooker then snooker players are firmly put in their place! Score one for the good guys!

Liability Snooker at Hard Times in Bellflower

Efren was around Hard Times in Bellflower when we played up to $50 a point on a fairly regular basis and he NEVER wanted any part of that game. Parica was a regular player in the game and plays great snooker. Efren would play in some of the cheaper games once and a while, and I do believe he could be a great snooker player if he wanted too, but we have to believe him when he says he doesn't like the game. LOL John thanks for reminding me of what Parica can do on "that table" at Hard Times. I saw him firing balls in the hole and running out like he was playing 9-ball. For those of you who don't know how 'that table' plays, the pockets will BARELY fit 1 snooker ball. Now that is tight. If Parica can do that on a table with pockets like that, I'm sure he wouldn't have a problem playing snooker in Europe if he practiced a bit.

I'm fed up with those stories about what an onlooker saw someone somewhere do on a snooker table.

If he can really do it let him go to a snooker tourney and do it, it doesn't get any simpler than that.

Well done Fred, you did well tracking him down and finally clearing this up. Isn't it amazing how peach's interview isn't quite what happened. Its amazing how things can get blown out of proportion! 500 Baht lol

But like I kept saying Efren said himself that he can't beat snooker players. What was the point in other people saying "yes he can" if the great man himself doesn't think so?

LasTwo, you make me laugh lol

I've spoke to Parica quite a lot in recent months and beleive, I don't think even he (yes parica!) would think he could go over to England and play snooker lol <snort> :D

Efren is not a snooker player and he makes no bones about it. However
theres nothing that says had he liked the game or chosen to play it that he
would not have excelled. I think the same can be said about the top snooker players. Each has to have talent to get to their level.
I am always amazed at the difference between English Snooker pockets and
american. Of course I think most english tables and games are played on 12 footers compared to alot of american tables being 10 foot.

You do realize that a 12 foot table has 44% more surface than a 10 foot one, right? With whatever that means for the average shot distance.

yes I think its harder on the 12 foot tables

The thing about snooker is most of the top players in the world started playing the game at VERY young ages. I would doubt many of the players that ever made it into the top 16 in the world at snooker started the game any later then 12 years old, most start ALOT earlier then that with coaches and the whole 9 yards. That is what it takes to excel at the game, you need to start playing it VERY young as that is when we learn things the easiest. That is also what makes it hopeless for pool players trying to convert, they are simply too old to shift to snooker. It is no doubt easier to go the other way because you are going from a very hard game in snooker that you must start young, to a very easy game in 9-ball which it is possible to excel in even if you start playing in your late teens.

I highly doubt Ronnie O'Sullivan could have made it to the pro ranks of snooker if he had picked up his first cue at the age of 16, I would bet huge money on it, those early years are crucial to success in that game. If you start playing snooker at 6 years old for 8 hours a day 6 days a week you will likely be running centuries and playing competitive pro level snooker by 16. If you start playing snooker at 16 years old for 8 hours a day 6 days a week you will maybe be running the occasional century but I doubt you will be able to play competive pro level snooker by 26.

Most snooker pro's have childhoods akin to Tiger Woods, they are playing their sport from almost the time they can walk and by the time they are 12 years old they are already better then almost anyone BUT the pro's.

it means that the average shot distance is 20% longer.

Ignore this post, it's just Fred trying to distort a good emotional argument with facts again! :p

Except when playing snooker players dont tend to use the whole table to nearly the same degree as a pool player. The average shot length a snooker player makes is probably not alot different then the aveage shot length a 9-ball player makes. Snooker players rarely go past the blue spot when playing well until the reds are done.

Hahah I am really enjoying this. Yes I saw Parica firing balls in those tiny holes and running out. Do I think Parica would do well playing snooker in Europe? NO. I said that last joke because it seems that once someone mentions any pool player converting to snooker, it causes more of a commotion than someone desecrating the Koran in Saudi Arabia.

You guys really think that not one pool player alive (that wasn't a snooker player) is a ball pocketing genius that might, just might, be able to hang with the big boys in Europe? Anyone?

are these threads to prove,,,,,,,,,,

1...that the game of snooker is more difficult to master than the game of pool.
2...that snooker players are better than pool players

to address 2,,,,snooker players grew up playing snooker, and a great pool player has just as much talent as the snooker counterpart. he just grew up playing pool.

and while a snooker player will occasionally beat a pool player in pool, and a pool player will less than infrequently beat a snooker player in snooker,,NEITHER will EVER beat their counterpart in 3C. and that's only because neither grew up playing 3C.
