Efren -> One of the Greatest Ever

Don't forget his very first match at the KOTH - Ray Martin beat him.

Wait until Efren reaches Ray's age and he has to play the new hot shot.

Ha Ha

The Orange Crush AND the breaks?

Against shortstops?

How impossible does that sound?

Or is this just one of those urban legends that grows every time it is told.

Of course if you don't get to the 5 after the break then since Efren does not miss, you lose.

Jake

No one is gonna beat Efren for the money at any game! He has won every high dollar tourney out there. The guy is truly an artist when it comes to pocket billiards.

Southpaw

Well......I think Efren is just lucky. His stroke isn't really that good....as soon as this 40 year lucky streak is over, he'll be just another banger (like Thorsten Hohmann, Johnny Archer, and Ralf Souquet).

On the other hand, it's possible that I could be mistaken (it happened once before when I thought breakup was human).

its funny ,i got efren to sign my cue in vegas in may,all my friends were saying "who,s that".and im like saying hello the greatest pool player ever.and this just proves it.at his age and the gruelling schedule of the tourny,the guy is not human.congrats efren,you have proved it time and time again.

Efren began to win 9-ball tournaments again in the early 90's after he improved his break.

No question he is the greatest One Pocket player today by far, and maybe one of the two or three best ever. And on All Around ability, I like him too.

But he is probably not the best 9-ball player today. I would have to put my money on Dennis Orcullo.

What makes Efren so great is that, like cream, he seems to continuously rise to the top. When the bet gets real big or the prize money goes thru the roof, Efren is there like a bear.

He seems to save his best game for the absolute right moment. Yes, Efren is a great champion. Maybe the best ever when it comes to playing on the big stage for all the marbles. He just smiles that little smile and grabs the cash, again and again.

One other thing that rarely (if ever) gets mentioned:
In the "old days" it was a real chore to get all of the best players in the WORLD together for a tourney. With today's ease of travel, to be the best, really means you BEAT THE BEST in the WORLD.

For you naysayers: what does he need to do next? Win Trick Shot Magic? lol

The IPT tournaments have proven one (other) thing about Efren. He still has all the endourance needed to play long sessions. This was the subject of great discussion when comparing his game to Cliff's in an earlier 1p thread. Pehaps Efren could stay with Cliff, or any one else, in a long session,..... but thats another thread.

Since I was there and I had money on the match, it's not an urban legend.:D
Back then Efren was giving Keith 10-7 in one hole.

Efren is the best now,and he has been there,and been there,and been there,and has walked away with the money. So now people are supprised at fifty two,he is not playing hard,but with his acumulated knowledge,he is playing smart. It gets down to knowing when,and knowing how,and when you are playing for that kind of money,you better have been around the tables for forty years,and have fifty two years under your belt.

Efren is a Legend, Efren is like saying Babe, Jordan or Tiger, honestly at his age, he is performing amazingly well for such long days.

So much for Sigel, honestly I really thought he would be up in the top 5, looks like he lost much of what he had back in the day, when at one point he seemed unbeatable. Back then he had the game to back up the talk and now the talk is all he has left and it's sad, I still would love to see him back in stroke. Sigel hurt his status in pool by staying away so much, and now this comeback isn't helping at all, his status would have been better if he stayed retired unless he really gets it in stroke soon.

The only question for Chicago is who is going to come in second:D

Nothing one can do with a cigarette in one's mouth is a sport. Pool is a game, like chess, golf, and sailing. :D

I know you was prob half joking but being able to hold a cigarette in ones mouth is an interesting prerequisite to be called a sport. Lets look at the original ancient olympic disciplines:

* Boxing
* Equestrian events
o Chariot racing
o Riding
* Pankration
* Pentathlon
o Discus
o Javelin
o Jump
o Running
o Wrestling
* Running
* Wrestling

Hmm, now Im sure I could ride a horse or a chariot and smoke a cig!

:D :p

I hate to knock Mike Sigel, but he doesn't have the body of a young man who can inhale all sorts of powdery substances for hours on end anymore. That's all he did when he was at the top of his game.

Yes, that talc people sometimes use can raise hell with your lungs if you inhale it accidentally. :rolleyes:

Is Efren one of the best ever? ... Is the Pope Catholic? Does a bear $hit in the woods?

Ha Ha Ha

But watching him play lately and seeing how so many of his fundamentals are wrong, (according to announcers not me) and how many shots he misses, he just does not look like the best out there.

But, at the end of the match he is always just a bit better than his opponent. And of course he always says he was lucky. Could it be true? Luck plays a big part of his game?

Can he possibly be so great as to make himself look like someone can beat him at anytime? If he just wasn't so darn lucky.

LOL

The "Orange Crush" is the 5-and-the-breaks. The "Orange Crush and the Breaks" sounds pretty silly.

I thought it was the 5 and out.

But you are probably right. No one good enough to give up anything more than the 8 around here.

Did see Grossman give the 6 and out once, but that is 100 miles from here.

Jake

he's in a different league of his own then...

You might as well have said he was giving the Orange Crush AND the 5-ball...
