Efren Reyes 11 v 9 The One - I'm in heaven!

I'm not sure where to begin with this but I shall start with a brief thread. I have been trying to track down Efren for the past two weeks and finally I met a guy who knew a guy etc and they told me efren was at a particular pool club tonight. I had told everyone that I wanted to play efren and only efren, after all he's the greatest IMO. Well tonight I got extreemly lucky, he was at a local pool hall and I had got my wish and had the chance to play him. I arrived at coronado lanes and when I walked in it was packed with lots of local players with a large money game going on in the centre. I promtly went to the bathroom and wondered wether I had made the right decision to play such a great player in front of so many people - his adouring fans no less! I was worried about making a fool of myself given my lack of expertise with the larger balls. However I reminded myself that this was what I had come to Manila for and went back in the pool room. I found efrens manager and to my disbelief there was efren sat on the same table playing chess against another local. I offered either two short races or a longer race for a larger amount. We agreed on a race to 11 for a very modest $200. I asked Efren for the breaks but to my disbelief he refused, and he also offered no other spot. However he did offere me the first break LOL! The game was 8 ball which I preffered given 1) he was the current world champion and 2) my break still sucked in 9 ball. I wasn't keen to play in this particular pool hall as the tables where poor and very slow, however this was an opportunity too good to miss so let Efren pick the table and off we went!

I was very nervous and missed a ball in the first and efren ran out for a 1:0 lead. He hooked himself on his last ball in the next and I ran out to make it 1:1. I then ran out the next 2 to make it 3:1. I went in off on my break and Efren pulled it back to 4:4. I nudged ahead to 7:5 with some good clearences and then Efren pulled it back to 8:8. I have to confess that after the first frame I though here we go, I'm going to get thrashed here. But when I was 7:5 up I thought this is great, I don't care if I win another game lol! However at 8:8 my break let me down and efren potted out to go 9:8 in front for the first time since the first rack. Then he potted out on his break to go to the hill 10:8 in front. It was my break next and I knew that he would have the next break for the match but I should still try and put some pressure on him. I broke and ran out to make it 10:9. However despite losing ideal position a couple of times in the last rack efren ran out for the win. He asked to play me again giving me a 2 start which I took as a great compliment but I declined.Luat was also there but I only had eyes for efren and he had just edged me out on home turf off even - that was enough for me!

Overall I think we missed two balls each, and efren snookered himself on his last ball once or twice. given the circumstances and my part time status I am happy with my showing - I didn't miss much and I think all the frame wins where 8 ball clearences. How many sports do you get to play the world champion!

Taxi fair and new pair of undies - $5
Race to eleven against the greatest 8 ball player ever - us$200
satisfaction from playing the magician himself and taking 9 him to the wire off scratch - priceless!!

I am still pinching myself!

Way to go, TheOne. You not only lived your dream but you did yourself proud keeping the match so close. Congratulations.

Cool stuff, T.O.! I'll never forget the first time I came up against a top pro (Archer) in a tournament. When they announced the draw, I wouldn't have been more nervous if they told me I had to go out in the parking lot and fight Mike Tyson. He beat me (of course), but that first time is an experience that stays with you.

Thanks guys, I posted ths thread at about 6am (I think!?) and I was extreemly plastered- decided to paint the town red to celebrate(?) my err,,, loss lol! I'm suprised it was readable :-)

Still have a smile on my face, cant explain it but I guess that's the measure of the guy. He wasn't as friendly as I thought he would be, he was very serious during the game and didn't smile much (until just before sinking the last 8 :-) But understandable I guess. However he was friendly enough afterwards and let me take a pic for my donation :-)

Funny when I first started playing in my home town I used to get excited when the best player in the club used to walk in after finishing work early. Then I found out who was the best player in town and of course he was the guy who I wanted to play and try and beat. It had been 14 years since the last time I had that buzz from meeting and wanting to play someone who I respected so much. Of course the sad thing is, its all down hill from Efren.

Image attached, unfortunately the window to play was so short and I didn't have time to go get my camera, so no video and poor quality camera phone pic (attached)

Congrats! Practice your break and come to Houston, I will play you some 9-ball, races to eleven for a G or so.

Congrats on your good showing in the Phillipines. I have a friend (Phillipine local) who went back home for Christmas. He also said that the tables are really crappy and very, very slow.He said you can gamble there and almost everyone will gamble with you as long as they are given some sort of spot if they are weaker.
They love to gamble, it's in their blood.

Your game with Efren wasn't a gamble.Win or lose, either way you playing the Magician you were going to get your money's worth.Good on you. RJ

Cool story, the One ! Playing against a top player is always something special. And if the top player happens to be Efren... well :)

There is a saying: "If a player with money plays against a player with experience, the player with the experience gets the money and the player with the money gets experience" ;)

too true Mj - the main purpose of my visit was to play the best and see for myself how good he is. OK a race to eleven for small pot may not be the best indication but it sure stoked the fires and reminded me of what I gave up. Nothing like the buzz of playing for cash. Good luck in Europe, hope to play in that myself one day if I ever find my way home lol

However I'm not daft and didn't come here to gamble high as I am far from ready for that, but i'm happy I got my moneys worth.

recovery it is true, I've turned down games with players that I would beat easily who wanted to play for cash. Its amazing even though they have no idea how capable you are they still want to play for cash! I don't want to take money from young kids and hustlers who prob wont pay anyway. I had an interesting incident with one suh guy which I may share later. Its prob best to stick to the top players if you want to come to Manila and play for cash.

siz, that's a bit out of my way but maybe. What's your real name? ;)

Wow! Not too shabby considering he's the current world champion. Enjoy your time in the Phillipines and keep us updated.

TheOne::next time you see Reyes up the bet to $5,000.00 or even $1,000.00..then see who wins ?

This, to me, seems an inappropriate attempt to make light of our hero's wonderful achievement. TheOne missed two balls in twenty racks, as few as Efren. You've got a chance against anyone if you do that. Rather than suggesting that TheOne may not have gotten Efren's best game, why not just revel in what TheOne accomplshed like the rest of us?

SJM & cuejoey,
I think SJM is exactly right. I am fairly certain that TheOne got Efren's best game, because whenever Efren plays he ALWAYS tries for the same intensity and focus. In my opinion, that is what sets the top pro's apart from us hackers. They approach not just each and every match the same, they approach each and every SHOT the same - whether its to win the DCC or just to cut out a little piece of TheOne's heart. If you think that these pro's are turning on and off their best game, I think you are wrong. I believe that Efren is on record as saying it's been many years since he has stalled anyone (though of course I don't know for sure); and he has said in an Inside Pool article that giving each shot the same focus and concentration is how he built a pressure-resistant pool game. I will also say that I saw 100 players at DCC, anyone of which could easily beat Efren in short race 9-ball (though my money is still on Efren) - 9-ball is a stupid game (but fun to watch).

WRONG!!! i don't gamble.my point i was trying to make to theone was that theone has a good game going no doubt about it.BUT to be careful with his money as there are ALOT of unknowns that can play and beat the Pro's and to keep everything in perspective...
people can really notch up their games when alot of money is at stake...my money was hard to make during my life time to gamble with it..besides my game is about half as good as theone.........play pool everybody and have fun....

It just kind of bugs me when someone steps up to play a champion, does pretty well, and someone else says "oh yeah, play for $$$$ and see what happens!".

Well, nobody on this board and few on this continent are stupid enough to step up to Efren and play for $$$$$$$. It's a ...bad investment shall we say.

When he comes to Los Angeles, Efren will play anybody for $50 a race. That's the kind of guy he is. He not rich, he needs to make money for his family. I am glad there are players like The One who will step up and play him. I know I will and so will all of my friends when he comes to L.A.

We're not stupid. We're sporting players looking for experience and recreation. It's kind of hard to make a profit playing an Efren or an Archer and $200 is peanuts these days. He's going to win whether it's $50 or $50,000.

Chris :no one is calling anyone stupid....i was Only giving some fatherly advice to keep things in perspective...in my lifetime i have seen frineds and unknowns loose Alot of money in the heat of a moment..this is all my comments were based on..good luck in your pool playing

I happened to meet TheOne when I chanced upon him at Rack 'n' Roll Billiard Cafe one evening here in Manila. He's a warm and friendly guy that almost makes you feel you've known him for a long time. He plays with a pred and has that classic snooker stance, and yes, he plays a really good, solid game of 8ball. He told me that Efren is his favorite player and that he's trying trying to track him down and be able to play him. I said Efren used to come and play at the very table we were playing on. He smiled and said that that makes him happy already. :p

I'm glad that he has finally realized his dream of playing the Magician. When he told me he lost 11-9 to the world 8ball champion a few days ago, I almost didn't believe the scoreline but when he mentioned that he was not given any handicap at all, I almost fell down my chair! Craig, that was quite an accomplishment. Only a few in the world would dare play him even on money games. :D

Text me when you can. Maybe we can play some more 8ball before you leave the country and show me how you almost kicked Efren's ass.
