Efren Reyes Cup Announced!

If this is going to become a similar event as the Mosconi Cup, this will be a heavy blow for US pool.
European pros will get another nice pay day, which will make their life as a pro much easier. Overall competition and standard will rise even more as many players want to qualify for both the Mosconi and the Reyes Cup.

I don't think that's going to be a problem.
America can create a similar event too, say America vs Antarctica so they will have a fair chance, and they can gain experience that way...

It seems they select from total 7 countries only in this first cup. Your top Fargo list for Asia excludes Japan which is one of the selected countries to be accommodated. Naoyuki Oi 782 will probably replace Biado if they follow Fargo rate so will be even closer.
If factor in that Europe is already well oiled winning confident MC team and Asia playing as team for first time , it may be pretty even .

Surely Chang is going to make this team!

Any idea who's responsible for the venue prep in China. One would have to be very careful doing international events in mainland China, especially when they list "Taiwan" as a nation in their promos.

Hold on did Matchroom a few posts above confirm this is just a layout of a possible tv show to pitch to the networks? Or did he confirm this is actually happening?

I would think the EFREN CUP should be played in the Philippines!!!!!

Ay nako, one would think so, at least for the inaugural "Reyes Cup." :scratchhead:

While the Philippines is considered the Meca of pool by many, Pinoy "promoters" don't have a real good reputation for putting on a first class event...crossing the i's and dotting the t's so to speak, "Philippine time" as it's called.

I'm guessing Barry and the boys at Matchroom make Johan Ruijsink the Captain of the Asian team...just to keep it competitive. ;)

Confirmed it was just a pitch.

Hard to see any reasons it wouldn't actually happen though.

Let's face it, this is what every sane pool fan in the world wants to see! Not the washed up Mosconi Cup! Bring it on!!!

Slight favorites, imo. The top european players were right there with the asian guys. If you took the top 5 based on fargo-rate and the specific regions mentioned, the teams look like this:

ASIA
Wu - 817
Ko - 811
Dennis - 811
Chang - 809
Biado - 804

EUROPE
Shaw - 816
Neils - 805
Filler - 797
Gray - 791
Appleton - 791

Based on this they'd probably be like 6/5 favorites or even less, I'd imagine...

Alternating break, races to 5. Scotch and team matches... Fargo Rate has no power here.

Definitely.
I hope that the Mosconi doesn't eventually stop because of this though.

Why wouldn't they just do one event with three teams? The format would be similar, but would have to change in a few ways.

The advantage of three teams is pretty obvious--it would have to be closer to a round-robin, which would virtually ensure that the event lasted nearly the entire planned duration.

It would also be cheaper than two events.

It’s not as good for TV, they want to create an us vs them mentality, which they have managed for the Mosconi Cup.

***Reminder*** this is not an actual event per the mathroom response a few posts up. It is rather a pitch of a possible event to the tv networks. We can get un-excited now:D

This would only lead to the USA being double humiliated.. They are not anywhere near the standard of the other two teams and they would devalue the event..

Only players spectate anyway. I wonder what would happen if each day was different games.

Hmm not so sure, for pool generally absolutely yes, but here in the UK at least I’ve spoken to (and seen at the venue) plenty of non-players who aren’t massively into cuesports but like the spectacle of the Mosconi Cup.

If it was a different game every day then it would turn off the casual viewer which is the last thing Matchroom wants.
