Efren still the man!

Efren did it again, "got lucky", and won the US Open One Pocket Championships.

He didn't play his best and missed some relatively easy shots at times, but he's still the best one pocket player around. It tells you something about how much leverage one pocket gives as players like Efren can use their full shot repertoire.

The greatest player of the greatest pool game!

And special thanks to TAR. Although I couldn't watch but few matches, I thoroughly enjoyed every last second and it was well worth the money.

It actually was a good finals. At the beginning it seemed that Gentile was flat out scared of Efren and Efren was outmoving him easily. Then Efren let up a little and Gentile snapped off two games.

But then mistakes on both sides favored Effie and he got there.

I found the match a bit more interesting than if Scott Frost or Gabe had been in the finals only because I enjoyed seeing Gentile try to move with Efren and could see that Gentile is a VERY VERY good one pocket player BUT he plays very standard one hole. So it was a pleasure to see what Efren would do against someone like that and how Gentile would respond.

It was also a great match from the commentary side. Scott Frost, Billy Incardona and Corey Duell, great team. Corey kicks at everything was the running theme and actually Corey did call a lot of very very good kick shots.

Good job again TAR. Congrats Efren and congrats to Chris Gentile, your action is dead now. :-)

The Efren Supremacy

Congratulations, Pare!!

Once again you showed your unsurpassed skills and understanding of the game. Although we keep hearing the phrase "I got lucky" from you, I think people are realizing now that you make your luck happen!! And you have reigned supreme in this game for a lot of years so much so that whenever they find themselves in a tight situation or shots, they automatically think or mutter to themselves this famous phrase in pooldom, "What will Efren do?"

You have truly traveled a long way since our days at Lucky 13!!

Efren Reyes, the Supreme Player!:bow-down::bow-down:

"Magician"

"The Magician" is the best man to ever raise a pool cue period. Glad to see Efren still smiling!

Perfect Storm is what I observed. There was some pretty serious pool in that one pocket tourney. You look at all the winners side upsets for a second.

First look at Efren's draw. His first three matches were Ike Runnels, Marc Vidal, and Jeff Carter....just saying he was minimum a 2:1 favorite over all those guys.\

His next match was Brian Butler....yes Brian Butler. That happened because Jeremy Jones beat Alex Pagulayan 4-0, then somehow loses 4-0 to this Brian Butler from Canada. Once again perfect storm and Efren cruises to another 4-0 win.

So now Efren has to play Corey who just made it out of a tough bracket full of upsets and hill hill matches. It's late at night though and Efren is probably tired for this match. Efren pulls it out hill-hill. Now he's playing for the hotseat. He made it to the hotseat only having to play one really tough match, sweet draw!

Now for the hotseat match Efren has to play Scott Frost errr Earl Strickland nopeeee he gets Chris Gentile. Earl beat Schmidt/Bartram/Harriman before facing Gentile. Gentile had to beat Mike Davis and Rafael Martinez. Don't forget Bartram upsetting Scott Frost on this side which is huge. So Earl and Gentile been in tough the entire tourney and Chris edges Earl out in a good hill-hill set.

So now you have Efren who breezed to the hotseat Vs. Chris Gentile who just had a rough rough path there. A fresh Efren gets the nod for the win and takes the hotseat.

Now on the losers side you get Earl/Corey/Alex/Scott Frost as your last 4 only one of them will make it to play Chris Gentile. Perfect storm, lots of hill hill action and Alex comes out of that fray to play Chris. Chris plays a damn near perfect set on Alex to beat him, it was a great set for sure.

So now its super late and Efren gets the title by winning 5-2 over Chris Gentile. Good win no doubt.

This is Chris Gentile's resume for the tourney.

Won 2 Burns, Richard 33-48 A-W1-22 W1
Won 1 Davis Jr, Mike 33-48 A-W2-11 W2
Won 3 Martinez Chavez, Rafael 9-12 A-W3-6 W3

Would Efren have won with Chris G.'s draw?

Well, Efren has won major one pocket titles against the toughest one pocket fields ever so my answer would be that Efren could have won with any draw. The fact that he got a good draw this event doesn't mean much because it's not like Efren hasn't already beaten every other living one player at one time or another to win events or for the cash.

I agree though that Chris Gentile worked his ass off to get to the finals. But in my opinion he was no match for Efren and if they ever gambled then I'd bet the farm on Effie giving Gentile 10:8.

FWIW I didn't see any of the tournament except the finals. I just bought in for that. I almost took your bet but I chickened out, thanks for the heads up on the start of the finals though. Glad I happened to catch your action forum post or I would not have known.

Too bad no one thinks to post match times in the main forum during these events.......

Would Efren have won with Chris G.'s draw?

Fair points. I don't want to take anything away from Chris either.

In fact, if anyone's interested, I could do a Fargo score calculation of the tournament, which should give a better estimation of their respective performance. I suspect Efren's still the man, but not by a wide margin.

Would Efren have won with Chris G.'s draw?

I mentioned on the chat about day 2 that Efren's draw looked sweet, I think we all thought he would be playing JJ not Chris the first time.
But I think Efren would of won with any draw, the way he was hitting balls at hardtimes last week , I had told people look out.
I just wish I was in vegas to see if he matches up with anyone.

Before Efren left CAli he post on his facebook going to Vegas gona try to in One pocket and 10 ball, well 1 down and don't be surprised if he somehow snaps the 10 ball off also.

Efren might have won, but I think without a doubt Chris Gentile had the best tournament of everyone!
I don't understand your logic that Chris ("without a doubt") had a better tournament than Efren when Efren beat him TWICE. Logic fail.

Looks like Brian had a good showing in the one pocket tourney...I'm proud to say that I was the 1st to stake Brian in a high dollar one pocket set years ago....He was always good at rotation but had just & i mean just started messing around with 1 pocket...We were in Baton Rouge & got him a match with Flyboy locking up 2 sets with fly getting the 8 in nineball...in which we were stone stealing & them playing even one pocket...Brian shot way straighter but fly knows all the moves & shots & Brian was actually learning as he went along from watching flyboy..it took 2 days to finish a 6 ahead set 1 pocket & 45 minutes after Brian finally won the one pocket to win the 11 ahead 9ball...Glad to see that he's still competing at a high level...Brian is real good people.

Never ceases to amaze me

This guy's best pool is 35 years ago according to him and anyone that seen him play then that is scary. He picked up onepocket in the late 80s in Chicago and now shots no where near as straight as he used to has some eye issues etc and is still a toss up for the best onepocket player in the world. Congrats to the time tested best onepocket player that ever lived.

Efren The Best Ever

Efren won four (4) Derby City one pocket titles in a row thats all I have to say... Oh I know he got lucky

I just finished watching a Derby Final (not sure which year it was) on U-tube where Efren was up against Immonen. Efren pretty much ran 7 racks to nothing against Immonen. Mika could only sit there and watch.

And, again, Efren DID have a lucky roll where a three ball got knocked into a hole after missing a shot, however, as for winning the match, luck was NOT the reason.

From my seat, Efren does not have a fancy stroke, doesn't power break, frankly plays his game as if he's reading the newspaper. But Lord, can the man shoot pool!
