Anyone else get to see Efren play last night?
Shirley and I were playing at DannyK's yesterday, and were wondering where all the regulars were. DannyK said Efren is at Hard Times, and if we had time, we should go up and watch.
We grabbed a burger (Danny has great food) and hot footed it up there. Arrived about 8:00 and the place was packed. Our friend Ramin was just getting his next match announced, so we watched a guy named Twig send him to the loser's side, then Li'l Al finished him off. I checked the board and it looked like he'd won a few matches before going out.
Efren and Parica were playing, but we couldn't get close enough to see anything, so Shirley was about ready to pack it in. I found a couple of seats at the other end, so Shirley decided to stay. Turned out those seats were gold, as Efren and Parica played all the rest of their matches right in front of us.
Chuck Evans traveled from Phoenix to play, and won his first seven matches. His wife sat next to us, and said his dream was to play Efren. I think they went to five, with Chuck getting one to go. Chuck missed a couple cuts, and his safeties didn't work out, so he went out. I forget who took him out on the loser's side.
Twig ended up playing Efren for the final match, getting one on the wire, going to eight. Efren took him down 8-3, I think. If there was no run out, Efren would lock Twig up at the other end of the table, usually frozen behind another ball. Twig came close to making some kicks, and the crowd showed their approval, with appropriate groans.
Efren showed great cue ball control, spinning the measles cueball on many shots. The guy next to me said he could run out, too, if he had ball in hand every shot.
Final match was over about 2:45 AM. Shirley was glad we stayed, and said what a great evening, and it was all free. Oh, she got Efren's autograph.
