I played in a little tourney tonight, and the guy who put me out was using an Elk Master tip, and I have a Talisman WB medium on my trusty ol Viking. Im no rookie, I know how to put English on the ball, but this guy was making it look effortless. He said it was the tip, but I've read posts on here where people say that hard tips put on the same amount of spin as soft tips. we both were using regular shafts, no predator or custon shafts, and I watched where he hit the ball, and it wasnt that far from center, so I believe that the Elk master just got a way better grip on the ball. any opinions on this? Thanks.

don't sweat what he does. sounds like he just spins the ball more than you do. work on your stroke and you'll be able to do the same thing. some guys just play more fluid than others.

I don't know what my rating would be, he would be prertty high though. I was just asking because he said himself he could not work the ball like that with a harder tip. I'm not too bad of a player, I'm just getting back into playing after about a 10 year break. I took third in the tourney, so I was happy, hehe. I know how to spin it, but I'm pretty convinced that he was telling the truth. I think I'll try out an Elk Master and let you fellas know how it goes. thanks.

Sniper,

I love my Tiger Soft tips!!! The only other tip i would use now, is a Tiger Sniper tip... Had one on my Gilbert and loved it!

As for the hard tips, yea i kept the Moori Hard on my I-shaft for about 3 weeks and then for some reason, i was playing and bam,,,, i couldnt get any english on the cb no matter what. I then put the Tiger Soft's on the cue and was back to being able to put alot of english on the cb.

That soft tip stuff makes compensating for shots that i have to slug or spin in.

To me the issue with a soft tip like an elkmaster is that it will go out of shape quicker and have to be replaced more often. Another option is a milkdud tip that is made from an elkmaster. I think it gets really good spin, but it won't mushroom. It does harden it up some though.

I like elk master! Beside being super cheap, It is also super soft to the point of sponge like! I would think it will compress longer. Hence generate more spin? I also heard from unconfirmed rumor that Efren like those soft tips but finds them not soft enough and soaks them in water before putting them on!

Most people who tried my cue did not like it though. They feel its too soft. But i realized that these tips actually take a couple of days to season. then they do play fantastic. I heard some people also try to clamp them for a few days before putting them on the cue to reduce the seasoning time.

Try the Talisman Pro Soft. Might be the compromise you are looking for. Harder than an Elk master, softer than the Talisman wb medium. You might even consider Moori soft or medium as both are softer than what you are using now.

A milkdud tip is one that has been soaked in a milk mixture and compressed to a certain thickness for 24 hours or more. Different people make milkduds in different ways, so not all milkduds are interchageable. I use the ones that Mike Johnson of Jensen cues makes. I like them alot.

Just compress an elk master in a C clamp for a day or two. Install and trim, then it will play like it's broke in. It will hold shape better and not mushroom as much. The will wear out faster and mushroom a little every once in a while, but at $.50 a piece you can afford to replace them more often. They play jam up if you like a softer tip.

You can talk about tips and different cues/shafts, deflection all you want, I can do more with my stroke than most with any kind of tip/cue. In other words, compare strokes, and everyone says they have a great stroke, but most have no idea what a great stroke is.

and I use a Hard moori or a super pro, both are hard. Draw takes faster with a hard tip.

It's not always just the tip.

work on developing your stroke to improve? I have to throw on the BS flag on this one. spend a few dollars on another tip, that'll get the job done!

This is so true. Everyone believes that a soft tip gives more juice when just the opposite is true. The soft grabs the ball better than a hard so fewer miscues but this friction also retards the amount of spin. To get maximum juice you want the hardest tip your stroke will allow and more practice.

well, I didnt't mean to start any fights here, lol. I have a decent stroke, not quite ready for the tourneys on tv, but not wagging around like a dogs tail either. I have never used a soft tip, but from what I have read, the milk duds hit like a medium or hard tip, but work it like a soft. I can move the ball with the tip I've got, but I am going to try the milk duds out. I ordered 6 Dudleys today, so I will see if they are better. I agree that the stroke is the most important thing, but on the other hand, I'm guessing that the softer tips are a little easier than what I've got.

i'm betting what's going on is that you're noticing the difference in styles. i know a few people with smooth fluid strokes but the truth is what ever gets the job done.

You're a wise man Dickie. The Molavia {r} & Triangle works best for me. Oh Snipershot dont forget the diameter of his shaft may have been smaller than yours also. Which means he doesnt have to go as far off center.
