Hello. Anyone else seen the end of the Color of Money match between Efren Reyes and Earl Strickland. The end of the match gave me a good laugh. The announcher, Mark Wilson(I think his name was) said something to the effect like "Earl strickland sure can shoot" and then the camera goes over to Earl and he's got on this mean looking facial experssion on. Nothing against you Earl if you happen to read this. I am a big fan! And the match was great. I think Earl ran either a 5 pack or a 6 pack. For anyone who hasn't seen the match, at least try to catch the end of it for some good entertainment.

No offense to you either Mark Wilson(sorry if I got your name wrong). I know how hard it must be to announce an event like that and sure you got some great experience doing the event.

I sure wish I could understand Philipino. I would love to know what Efren said on one of his interviews. They first interviewed him and he spoke English and said some simple responses. The announcher then asks him a series of questions in what I believe to be Phillopino and Efren goes off telling his life story :). Anyone know what he said?

I did not hear the Efren interview at all.
HE went to Mark Wilson and said he was lucky.
Do you have the AccuStats video?
I'll check the tape again if I have time.
Philippines' main dialect is Tagalog.

Well 2 things you know Efren said for sure.

2. I was lucky to win.

No, it is not.
Jeesh, know what you're talking about.
It's Tagalog.
Efren comes from Angeles, Pampangga in the Philippines.
They speak another dialect there as well.

i saw it ages ago! i only managed to get a copy of the first part. the interview you're talking about must be in the latter part. i can interpret it if i watch it again. i know filipino/tagalog and kapampangan (dialect in efren's province) . but i'm not familiar with 'lalakimia me noco' . maybe i should see it again, or maybe i should ask my dad, hehe

If we have time before my wife goes to work, I'll try to get her to translate it. She's from the Philippines and speaks several dialects.

just more hot air!

I have never seen it or heard the interview but I am guessing it goes something like this

English announcer: "Efren, that was amazing how did you do it?"

Efren in broken English "Earl is a great player, I was lucky to win"

Philippine Announcer "Efren the Magician Reyes does it again proving the Philippines is still the leader of the pool world by beating on Earl Strickland yet again! That was amazing, how did you do it?"

Efren in Philippine "I just love beating that guy, nothing like watching him squirm. I coulda beat him worse then that but I figured on letting him get close and then snapping it away from him at the last minute, that kind of thing really lingers on a guy and he wont shoot worth shit against me for the next 3 years now, haha! The funny thing is any one of the top 20 people in the Philippines could have done the same and smacked him around in that match, we are just THAT good! Do you relize not one player in the entire of North America will play me straight up in 9-ball OR 1-pocket? I was thinking of starting up straight pool but within a month of playing that I am sure I could get no straight up action in that game either."

Sherm, I'm sure you love your wife dearly, but tell us the truth did you go looking for a philipino woman hoping it would improve your pool game? :D :D

No not really! I just wanted the best wife I could get and there are no better women on earth, than the Filipinas. Not to get into a lengthy disertation on the subject, but the culture in the Philippines is a lot different. For one thing, there is NO divorce in the Philippines. This influences the people to make the best of their marriage instead of changing partners every 7-10 years the way American's have come to do. Every man should know the joy of being married to a Filipina! There's just nothing like it!

This reminds me of a funny story Grady Mathews told me many years ago. He said I'm never getting married again! Instead I'm just going to pick some woman I hate and buy her a house! It works out the same in the long run and there's a lot less stress and anxiety involved! lol

just more hot air!

Sherm>> OOps, my old VCR doesn't seem to work today! May be a day or so before I can provide the translation!

The Philippines is composed of over 7000 Islands. There are over 100 completely different dialects spoken there. Tagalog was adopted as the "National" language many years ago, because it was the most widely used dialect. English is considered their "Business Language". My wife is from Cagayan De Oro City, on Mindinao, one of the largest islands in the southern part of the Philippines. They speak a dialect there called Visayan. She also speaks Cebuano, Tagalog and English. Almost everyone in the Philippines under 50, are at least bilingual and speak English as well. Their schools are taught IN ENGLISH, (not English taught in the schools). Their courts are conducted in English. Their Constitution, is almost a carbon copy of ours, and was written in English! Americans can travel there without any real language barriers, except you won't understand what they don't want you too! lol If you get away from the big cities, especially Manila (hope I don't offend anyone here from Manila) and travel to the provinces, the people are the friendliest and most interesting people I've ever encountered! Manila also has these people but as in any big city, it can be trouble if you don't know your way around. Also the poverty and polution is abundant. The up side to the haze in the sky is the beautiful sunsets over Manila Bay! It's incredible! Ahhhh, I can't wait to return to the Philippines!!!!! Eventually I plan to retire there! Or maybe semi-retire! lol

My wife is Filipina also, married 31 years. I visited Manila once years ago, several kids gathered around me saying "hey Joe". You should have seen the look on their faces when I told them in tagalog that my name wasn't Joe, it was Al.

sorry to piss your bubbles but if your wife is Bisaya, she can't translate efren's dialect unless she knows Kapampangan (Efren's dialect) too. thanks for the nice words. i am happy for you and your family. allow me to desert shortly from the topic. for different periods of time, official languages in RP are spanish, tagalog, english and filipino. many use tagalog & filipino interchangeably. tagalog is the purist local lingo. filipino is continuously evolving, & accepts borrowed words. ex. english - jeepney filipino - dyipni tagalog - sasakyan.

going back on the subject, i hope i'll have the time pretty soon to check out the stores to get a vol 2. i'm afraid it'll be a little difficult.

I watched the end of that match last night agan.
The Filipino announcer shook Efren's had and their conversation was inaudible.
From the looks of it, the announcer was kidding Efren like what took you so long. And you could tell from Efren his usual " I was only lucky" look.
The Filipino announcer was horrible btw. He did not keep score of the games by inning. Mark Wilson was the color commentator and play by play announcer while the other guy did nothing but read the score.
I'm still amazed to this day Efren came back from being down 87-104 ( race to 120 ). That match was supposed to be a race to 100 and was stretched to 120 somehow.
The promoter of that event, Bob Moore, has since passed away.

The Interview with Efren was not at the end of the match, it was in the middle somewhere. It was before or after a 30 min break. Efren didn't say much at all at the end of the match because he spoke in English.
