Equipment cost vs. Winnings

I'm one of those guys who tacks various statistics of my pool game. Here is one that made me smile.

I bought my equipment last Summer.

Cue cost $135 Lucasi
Hard shell case $40
Various items, tip poker, chalk, shaft cleaners, etc ...$25
----------------------
Total Equipment $200

Weekly $5 tournament winnings (since I bought my equipment) $470
The above is 1 8-Ball and 1 9-Ball tourney a week.
Other $5 to $10 tourney winnings $70
Ring games and various other small action, + roughly $50
---------------------
Total Winnings $590

I guess the equipment was a good investment.

Keep in mind I only play very small stakes and small tourneys. Not bad for someone who considers himself a non-gambler.

Have you paid for your equipment with winnings?

I thought I was just in the hole considering my losses.

Thanks for clarifying!!!!

I went from a few hundred to $4000.00 hooked just by reading this post.

Your friend,

Mark

You have to also subtract off the entry fees into the tourney and only count your profits towards paying off your equipment purchase. Think my equipment was about:

Local Custom Playing Cue: $650
Omen Jump/Break: $350
Instroke Case 2x4: $250
Case items: ~$100

Various tourney winnings: Not sure over $2000 in the past year
Western BCA 9ball last October: Singles $1305..Teams $780
Hotels, food, entry fees, gas, etc, etc: Over $1200

Overall I am up for the year and have paid of my equipment several times over the past few years.

I gotten back many more times worth of enjoyment playing the game by comparison to what I paid for my equipment... and that's good enuf for me... and that's why I consider it a hobby. :)

I think I'm a bit even on that ratio, at the moment.

Equipment I've currently got - spent around $1500-ish all told over time.
Winnings - I pulled down around $1200-1300 last year, and this year, I've started tracking winnings in a spreadsheet. Not doing so hot for first couple of months, but I'm up around $150 (this is after subtracting all entry fees, though).

I don't like your accounting method! OK, maybe I'm only up a little. I guess I need to come in the money tonight.

Since last summer I'm up almost exactly $5,816.64. Considering my bar bills I'm down about $11,393....

LOL. Are you my twin brother? Thats about where I am sitting too. But since I got hooked on World of Warcraft for the past several months by winnings is $60 and bar expenses = $0

I'm probably down overall by a couple hundred. $1700 in equipment, I would guess. As far as table time is concerned though, I've been ahead on table time for about 2 years now. This sport doesn't cost me too much.

Bentley Case... $180
Custom Break Cue... $400
Custom Playing Cue... $1200

Feeling I get everytime I win a cash game....

PRICELESS

:)

counting the cost of my cues, table time and gambling losses. i haven't won a dime. i think of quiting a lot when i think of all the money i've thrown into this game. i love the game but i just don't win much

i'm a strong c player

If I added up all the cues I bought over the past couple of years It would take me a while to actually get out of the RED.

Schon LTD 700$
Viking 200$
Meucci Original 350$
5280 100$
Espiritu's 600$
Custom cue 450$
Break Cue's (2) 200$
Gilbert JB 375$
TOTAL- 2975$

Now add in all the practice and tournament costs and everything else, I think I am probably around 5,000$ in the hole.

Now I have sold most of the cue's so, that kinda offsets the amount of $ I've spent atleast to around 3,000$

Same here. I will never catch up. The hole justs keeps getting deeper and wider.

I've spent a ton of money and won a good deal of it but...

I really play the game because I love it! and no amount of money can substitute for that ! :) I have met many folks over the years who are in it for money or / and ego and they seem to be sad, not really enjoying what they do ! I never want to be in that frame of mind !

i try to think of it as paying my dues. maybe one day i can win some money. you know what's funny, i think everyone but me is winning. guys i give weight to always tell me how they beat someone outa respectable scratch but all i seem to do is lose even when i'm supposed to win

I play simply for the Love of the Game. I am sure that I am considerably up over my expenses but do not keep track. For me, that would take away from the joy that I get from competing and playing. I definitely do not play the game for the money, but it does not hurt to win some cheddar every once in a while!

Tap tap tap

I can lose myself for hours on a pool table. No opponent or gambling required. I have nice equipment because I find it more pleasant to play with. Since I play for pleasure, and not for income, it doesn't matter to me if I've won more or less than I've spent.

Good Rolls,
Rasta

I like your attitude MrLucky. I play for the competition/fun and to steadily improve my own game.

98% of those playing only for the money would be much better off with a real job.

Mr. Lucky, good POST & very true.

We have more than several great players, who don't pick up a Cue anymore, because they are at the Casino, trying to make a buck. A large percentage of them are failures.

They are missed in some ways, but not missed in other ways. The fact they awoke each morning, looking for someone easy to rob, did a real number on their mood & personality. A few of the groupies liked them, but the masses shyed away.

Pool is a great game & builds long term comradierie when sportsmanship, integrity & the game are the main ingredients.
