ESPN article on Dennis Orcollo

I saw Orcullo play this Sunday in the Hard Times tournament and he made those tough tables look like bar boxes. Great player.

I just wish guys like Orcollo, Corteza, SVB, Appleton, Mika, Souqet, etc. could make a very comfortable living. They deserve it for the level at which they play.

good article. Even if I had the feeling that the article put too much emphasis on the cue part. I believe these guys can shoot with any cue.
I believe a non pool fan who read this article can think a cue can make you a much better player.. I don't think Orcullo was that much concerned about the cues.

Nice to see a long article on pool about a great player, Dennis Orcullo loves to play and compete especially coming from a major news outlet such as ESPN. However I wish the article painted pool a little more postively and that it used some different phrasing in various places such as the game fixer perhaps that role should be called the game maker. Also perhaps they could mention the recent upsurge in pool especially in the Pacific rim and the fact that is live on TV there and one of the most popular sports in Asia rather than leaving the reader with a feeling that Dennis is a special player in a dead game.

Pool is a great sport/game and it has a true champion with Dennis following up behind Efren. Now all we need is ESPN to get on board and give the game some air time, "live" would be great.

To say Dennis was not ''that much concerned'' about the cues, why would you say that?

Man its about time!!!

Now this is what is key here, his American made SOUTHWEST WARPED in his country!!!!

I mean I think he wasn't as concerned as the article want to intend....
a lot of pro players don't consider a cue that important to their performace, i don't see why it should for Orcollo. I could be wrong.. that was only a subjective post.

true. I don't know why the author chose to emphasize that

The cue part also had me scratching my head, but it just goes to show that even the best players need a cue they feel comfortable with.

Also with the last few sentences, the writer seemed to imply that Dennis lost on purpose so that he could once again find action. Anyone else read it this way too?

I got that impression at first; then I just wrote it off to mean that he had to undergo a bit of a losing streak to get people to bark at him once again. The article said he went through a dry spell cuz of his success.

Thanks for the link. A very interesting article.

I think that a cue can have a pretty strong impact on your game especially a new one. Don't get me wrong, a good player can play with anything but when you get to their level every little advantage can mean the difference between winning and losing.

Huge thanks to the OP for this thread, that was a hell of a read and real interesting stuff going on there...wish there was some sports documentary or something about these pinoy players and what they went or are going through. Edwin being shot and all...it's sad that things actually turn out this way, i've heard that story before but never really knew if it was true.

The entire pool scene there makes for a hollywood movie, i for one would pay to watch it..promise i won't download via torrent or buy no bootleg DVDs...i'd buy the most expensive 3D ticket, order large popcorns, nachos and diet coke to support not just the film! Someone please call Michael Bay or James Cameron. If Lucas if free, i'll make do.

With that said, i can't help but feel that there's a little play/manipulation in there somewhere about the cue. I'm sure the cue is real important in instilling confidence, but i think he put too much emphasis on it even in the article. So much so that i can't help but think his losing streak, lost of a great tool and all has been cleverly choreographed...i mean it's already clear that one of his main income is in the wager...but he ain't getting anymore from being the undisputed champion...this guy actually prefers to lose to give the opponent the head start and eats when from behind. His mentally set up for that, intentional or not. So whatever that is happening now, i have to be a skeptic. Or perhaps it's a build up before a huge sponsorship? Where it'll be like "wow...this is it, this is the cue"

We'll see..

Guess i won't be making no recent trips to Philippines...too risky..dam...i've been planning on visiting Boracay ..
