Etiquette Anyone?

What would you do?
In-house 8 ball league - opponent's shot, he plucks a ball from a pocket and slides it between the rail and my object ball to see if his cue ball will clear for a shot down the rail. I know this is probably not a foul but jeeze, is this proper pool etiquette?

I see lots wrong with it. You're using a potted ball for a measuring device.

What if the ball couldn't fit past the rail ball and he would have moved it?
Would that have been a foul.

Was it one of his balls? Maybe as soon as the potted ball touched the table, it would be considered to be in play again.

As in the old rules. If you scratched on the 8 and your opponent placed the q ball back on the table, he was acknowledging that the Q ball was still in play. Game not over when it should have been.

Still a cheesoid move no matter what the rules are.

Like your choice of screen names Billi Ard.

Foul. Has been for years. You cannot use a ball to measure.

Come on Matt... really, you know thats crap.

The only measuring device allowed in sanctioned play of any kind is the cue in your hand.

I'd probably inform him its usually a foul. He probably doesn't know.

Overall though, in a league match......I wouldn't care.

My sentiments exactly. Go ahead and shoot it. If it's so close you need to measure it, I'm betting I'm the favorite to get ball in hand in a couple seconds.

In any other league/division this would be illegal. Since this was an IN HOUSE 8 BALL LEAGUE..... it would all depend on the house rules IMO.

Pretty much. I was playing cheap 9 ball sets the other day and the guy I'm playing laid his cue down and walked around the table to look at the angles(didn't keep his hand on the cue). I'm not sure if he knew its not allowed or not, but I was the favorite.....so I really couldn't have cared less. :P

Also, myself personally, unless its something really game changing, even if its in the BCA/WPA rules......I don't care enough to call it. Measuring if a ball fits or laying your cue down for the most part isn't going to swing an entire set in their favor.

Now if someone kept laying their cue down to walk over and see an angle from a different view, using the cue as a guide and they start pocketing/returning safe 3 rail kicks consistently, I might say something then.

Maybe I'm just too lazy to care about small shit.
Just to clarify, if you're interested: current BCA rules allow you to use your cue to measure angles whether you keep it in your hand or not. I think this was changed a couple of years ago; it used to be that you had to keep the cue in your hand, as you said.

You can't use your hand, your cue, or anything else to measure a ball clearance distance.
