European Mosconi Cup Selection Criteria Announced

So, what do you all think about the USA getting different selection standards from Matchroom?

This should be interesting.

As I posted elsewhere, I love that Mark W gets an early jump on the US, with @ 8 guys been culled down to 5, and hopefully some "tour stops" beforehand as Luke mentioned on ABR last night.

I guess Matchroom could have done the same for Europe. But they have their reasons. But Europe doesn't need all that to show up as a unified team.

US certainly couldn't do a points system, we don't have enough majors!

Matchroom doesn't want 1.5 day bloodbaths - they want 4 days of show. Therefore they'd be stupid to bias one team over the other to set up a massacre. Matchroom ain't stupid and they have a huge Cup brand to protect.

Hadn't they almost always in recent years had different selection criteria?

I like it. Euro pool and US pool = Apples and Oranges

Not at all surprising.

They "might" have given Johan the captains choice just like the USA got, but then again I think the Mosconi Cup selection and weight it gives to the Euro events helps those events get decent fields of European pros like Mika, Darren, and others that might otherwise not play in those events and instead choose to stay overseas. I am pretty sure the Euro events are very happy they are still being used to decide one or two of the players.

I believe it's a good selection system, I'm sure the US captain will take into consideration tournament results among other factors before he presents his final team selection.
It should be another great event!

Edit: My previous comment here was a simple misunderstanding - I had thought they announced the actual euro team...oops!

As I had posted in another thread, I think it will be interesting to see if anyone complains later about the selection processes being different for each...(because some people seem to want to complain no matter what)
I suppose we shall see.

GO USA!

Looks very similar to the criteria used for America a few years ago, when America had five or six pro-caliber and "ranked" tournaments to use. Europe has a tour, so this works for them. Most promoters do have the so-called "wildcard" slots to use if somebody slips through the cracks that they want there. Think Thorsten and Mika who don't compete in very many Euro events today.

This year, however, the only pro-caliber tournaments will be this current Derby City Classic -- thank you, Greg Sullivan -- and Mike Zuglan's $25,000-added Joss event at the Turning Stone. You can't use only these two events for selection criteria for Team USA.

I am so grateful to Greg Sullivan for hanging in there with the pros. His passion for pool overcame his disappointment that occurred in Tunica. Mike Zuglan has always been a lone soldier, and he continues to provide one of the best events I've ever been to. Love that Turning Stone. These two gentleman are keeping American professional pool alive.

Unfortunately, though, two events can't be used for Mosconi Cup selection for America. It will be interesting to see how this year unfolds. I'm in a wait-and-see mode right now. :)
