European Open 2025, Sarajevo, March 11-16

SVB looks imperious.

Daniel Maciol is being given a reminder that life in the WPA is a lot easier.
I was going to say commentator's curse when Maciol pulled to 5-3. Then SVB started pulling away again. But Maciol has played very well and SVB has made two big errors - a very poor push up 5-1 and a crucial miss on the 5 ball up 8-7 with a chance to get to the hill.

Maciol on the hill at 9-8.

Yup. Can't take anything for granted on the WNT. SVB's careless push up 5-1 was probably his undoing, but he still had one final chance to retake control. He failed.

Maciol seems to have turned a corner and arguably become the best player from Poland. He made very few mistakes against SVB, and capitalized when SVB screwed up. He gave SVB very few chances to get back to the table once he began a run down 4-8.

that push was a screw up by shane for sure. i would still consider wojciech as the best polish player, but it's close

filler is plowing through the field of course. up next for josh is jayson, which may be grudgey because of poolitics

Zielinski was unstoppable over several tournaments a couple of years ago but now has faded back and Wojtek and Daniel and perhaps Mateusz at their top. But plenty of fireworks available coming from Poland, Babica still enjoying some high finishes and another young gun Kural constantly improving.

I don't think Matchroom realizes that Josh Filler is even there.

The wrap up article at the end of Stage 1 on Matchroompool.com opened with "Mickey Krause’s title defence came to a crushing end on Day Three of the 2025 European Open Pool Championship, while former world champions Shane Van Boening, Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, and Carlo Biado advanced to tomorrow’s Last 64 stage." Apparently, Matchroom thought either a) Filler was not in the field, b) Filler had not qualified, or c) Filler was not a world champion. Yes, the world's best 9ball player is so easy overlooked, LOL.

Filler vs Shaw has a chance to be a really good one and I wish both of those superstars the very best of luck. When they decide whether to stream it, Matchroom will have to juggle its commitment to showcasing Shaw with its apparent commitment to overlooking and denying the spotlight to Filler.

d) Filler is here, but since we feel sleighted we're deliberately going to aim the spotlight on everyone or anyone else in the field.

The lineup on Day 5 looks tasty. Yes, we lost three world 9ball champions in SVB, Ouschan, and Biado and a couple of World 10ball champions in Eklent Kaci and Ko Ping Chung on Day 4, but many of the game's biggest stars remain, including Filler, FSR, Shaw, and Szewczyk. I'm excited that two of the game's rising stars, Neuhausen and Labutis, are still in with a chance. Lechner is my dark horse, for I could see that he had found something at the International in November. There are quite a few capable of winning this title, and the next two days are likely to produce some breathtaking pool. Thanks to the exceptional commentators on Matchroom's staff, we will enjoy it to the max.

All at Matchroom can take a deep bow. The first ever Sarajevo edition of the European Open has delivered in a big way.

Disagree here. I think FSR is the most likely to reach the final in the top half of the draw. His play at the Mosconi Cup, in which he won every match in which he participated, was superhuman and I sense that he is picking up right where he left off.

Agreed that Ko Pin Yi is a serious contender for the title. No doubt, the bottom quarter of the draw is brutal, with Filler, Shaw and Szewczyk all serious contenders for the title, yet only one of them can reach Day 6.
