Evaluate my play?

You made some difficult shots but didnt play position well/if at all. I would work on pattern play and speed.

Also thats just a video of 1 game.. and it didnt show you walking away from the camera or anything when you turned it on so.. how long were you playing before you chose that section?

Need more continuous footage unedited.

That wasnt warmed up at all.. I had never video taped myself so I thought I might try it a couple times. The two I posted were continuous.I hear a lot about Pattern play and to tell you the truth I have no idea what you are talking about?? I have been trying to implement the stopping before shooting and surprisingly I make more shots if I pause right before shooting. If someone could get me some info on pattern play, that would be great! Practice Practice Practice!

yes

Oh yeh and the reason I havent just taped continuos play is becuase I am recording with my digital camera. Only tapes so long.

I have been out of the "Game" for a while. College came and didnt have time for pool and now I am getting back into it. I picked up a decent table for the garage to start on. I guess just critique me, I have never watched myself play before so that was interesting. Thanks in Advance!

Drill http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQS_ac0xY84 Messed it up at the end, it is hard to take steps back...

Nice video. Welcome back. Two things to check out.
1. Back hand is ahead of Perpendicular.
2. Final Back stroke is way too fast.

Hope this helps.

Play well....SPF=randyg

Your mechanics are close to perfect. Looks like your ferrule is white so you chalk your cue better than Earl, well actually most people do, LOL. As far as up and down movement in your stroke, don?t worry about it. There are legit reasons some people MUST have that motion in their stroke. Example: I am 6'5" with the arm span of a 6'9" guy. My pants inseam is 31". That is the inseam length of a guy 6' or under. If I didn?t have the same up and down movement in my stroke my knuckles would hit the table on many shots.

Good players have different speeds between shots ie rhythm. As someone has said and I too believe, you should slow yours just a touch. It will help in your shot selection, which does need improving. You obviously know how to hold and throw bank shots which is tough for some straight shooters to understand.

Bottom line is I believe you need lots of practice. If no balls are tied up when you get down over your first shot, EXPECT TO GET OUT. Put all else out of your mind. If you are ever in the Jackson, MS area let me know. I would love to knock some balls around with you. I have a GC4 and it wont cost you anything. Bust of luck.

I REALLY appreciate your feedback and everyone elses. These are things I have always known I need to work on but its just so hard to change sometimes. Old dog new tricks? I do believe Myth Busters Busted that so I cannot use that excuse :). Slow it down and practice.. On another note, the table I just purchased plays very badly, this is why I may seem to be slamming in the balls. It wont hold english and it only holds running english off the rails. I think I am going to ask Santa for new felt and rails for Christmas! I will keep you guys updated on my progress. I would also like to know more about pattern play.

-Your backhand is too far forward. This is a tough one for old dogs to break. Whatever or however you choose to break this habit it must be done during the preshot routine in practice to make it a permanent part of your set up.

Also on the two ball shot your bridge length is excessive. Figure out why for that specific shot...

You asked about pattern play. For those that don't know the term, I'll try and explain it. Basically, it is shooting the balls the easiest way possible...thinking- if I had ball-in-hand on this shot, where would I shoot it to get natural position on the next ball?? Now, you can't always run a rack that way, but it gives you the idea of what I mean.

Now, for your rack that you showed-
1 to the 2- You didn't pay enough attention and ran into the 5 ball. You basically got lucky off it to get a shot on the 2.
2-3- You are on the wrong side of the three for easy shape to the 4. (due to bad on the 2 from hitting the 5. See how it compounds?) You didn't take any time to see where you really needed to be on the 3. You just shot the 2 to get a shot on the 3. That put you tough and long on the 3.
3-4-Out of three feasible options..follow, come back, come straight across, you chose the worst one to do. Coming straight across, you have by far the smallest target zone to get in. You now have 2 pockets for the 4. The side and the corner. Put only a few square inches to put the cueball. If you had followed you would still have two pockets, but a bigger area to get the cueball into. If you had come back with a little draw and some left, you would have one pocket for the four, but it would be an easier way to get position.
4-5- The way you had to shoot it, if the CB hadn't rolled off, you would have had to jack up over the 9 and wouldn't have had the bank possibility.
5-6- You ended up with another bank on the 6, but in fairness, from where you had to shoot the 5 from, your options were limited, and the table did seem to kill the cueball speed.
7-8- I would have gone for a steeper angle on the 8 so I could go one rail down for the 9. Even where you were, I still probably would have.
8-9- Go one rail down. A lot of players will go the way you did. Sometimes I do to. But, by doing that, you are crossing the line you want to be on twice. I say twice, because you have two pockets you can shoot the 9 into. You can go two rails and be fine, but bring the cueball down closer to the side before it hits the rail.
9- Why bank it? Just shoot it in the corner.

There's my quick take on the patterns. Maybe someone can take the time to put it up on the wei table and show how the patterns should have played out to make the rack as easy and natural as possible.

One more thing- I always thought that when shooting the circle drill, you weren't supposed to go out of the circle or use a rail with the cueball.??

Good post Neil

Looking much better already, more in control............... I would suggest figuring out how to draw the cueball with as low and level of a stroke you can create. It does not take a whole lot of effort, like on the 8 ball I think you hit that too hard, I guess practicing on a tighter table would teach you that ehheeee. How does she play :D

Eric.

This table a peice of crap. It is actually already for sale again haha. The felt is so old it does not hold anything. That is why I hit it so hard.

Update from today at the top!

Good out, sir. I was most impressed with the fact that when you got on the wrong side of the 7 ball you knew to use inside english to get back in line on the 8 ball. I also like the speed with which you ran the rack. Great speed on the 5 ball combination. You left it in a makable position, Buddy Hall-ish.

I will take the six ball;)

This is a compliment. It means that he only has to run out to the six ball. Judging by your reaction Im not sure if you caught that. But anyway good shooting. And id give you the eight.

Oh ok sorry about that. I just started playing 9 Ball seriously. I have always played 8 Ball in the past but I find I am enjoying 9 Ball a lot more than 8.

Wow went and shot on the GC's at the University today and wow that table is hurting me more than helping me!

Same thing happened to me. After a long layoff from serious pool, strictly playing socially on bar boxes, I was eager to take it up again since I was doing decent on the small tables.

Cleaned up my garage, cleared off my 9 footer, and simply could not see the shots. Every medium difficultly shot was intimidating. Took a few days to adjust and about 3 weeks before I put any full rack runs together.

It really makes you appreciate how difficult this game is.

Maybe look into getting a used GC?
