Since there's always talk about "Color of Money" around here.....

Ever run into a "Vincent"-type in a pool hall......someone who plays so damn good, it makes you stand there in awe.....?

I play in a BCA league here in Billings, MT.....lots of great players around here, although most seem to have some weaknesses or flaws....might be 2 or 3 standouts.....but only once have I run across a "Vincent"-type, wasn't even here in MT:

It was in Rapid City, SD......just out casually shooting pool one evening.....some guy in his mid-20's came up & asked if I wanted to play for $1.00/game. I said "sure".....proceeded to get my ass handed to me in 10 games straight (it didn't help that I had 4 or 5 beers in me). I could tell this guy didn't trust me.....like I was trying to bait him or hustle him. I guess I wouldn't classify him as world-class, but he was damn good & made an impression on me.

He played perfect position, never (or rarely) missed a shot. Inspired me to play better though!

well my mentor who is a Math Teacher in high school here, is what i call the WOW Factor for me. He is very good, and there is someone that plays very good his name is Rick Bark here in Pine Ridge, and a very good player. I do agree, this is why i like to watch pool on t.v. as they make me wanna play my best.

MrPool, was it the pool hall on 8th Street in Rapid City or was it somewhere else.?

Yes but the Vincent I picked on was Steve Cook. Opps. Johnnyt

I believe it was a pool hall on Mt Rushmore road, on the west side of the street??? It was a few years ago, can't remember exactly.

I remember this guy being in his mid-20's, think he had sandy-blonde hair, a goatie, kind of stocky/slightly overweight.

There's an Iranian dude in my local hall who named himself Vincent.
He's the big fish in the little pond.
Vincent wasn't his real name.
He reverted back to his real name somehow.
Vincent has LMS. Little Midget short-pecker Syndrome.
Total attention ho and not very respectful to players who are not quite that good.
I would have smacked Vincent a few times already but I don't want to get banned from the place.

Har, and here I thought you were going to say something like "someone who is so cocky and always bouncing around and yelling "WOOOOOOOOO!!!" after every shot".

:/

i was playing a handicap tournament in a hall in Chicago named "The Billiard Cafe" just after the release of The Color Of Money. i was 22 at the time and it was the first time i played there and the owner made me a 7 ( the ratings were from 3 to 11 ). i ended up winning the tournament and came back the next week to play i was now a 9. i also won this tournament and what was funny was as we were announced for the final match, which were myself and a great Chicago player Ike Runnels who had an 11 ranking, after announcing Ike the owner announced my name as Vincent first then stumbled over his words and said my real name. everyone laughed it off and we played on and i went on to win 9 to 6. i will always remember this and that i played Ike strong.

I used to scout unknown talent to take them on road trips to make a few bucks and hopefully find the next champion. This list includes Rob Saez, Mike Rinella, Jerry Slivka, Shawn Putnam, Dennis Hatch, Cisco Diaz, etc. The best find was a Korean student at the local Liberal Arts college who played lights out. In order to Judge his speed I put him against Troy Frank playing hundred dollar sets race to 13. Troy quite after the first set (around 13-5) he thought I was sicking a roadie on him. This kid played phenomenal but would not go anywhere with me. I finally talked him into going to Michigan for a day and we only made about scores worth around a K. I thought that would light a fire but It didn't. He returned to Korea after a semester never to be heard of again.

Thank god you didn't corrupt that kid. :D

Now as for guys trying to act like "Vincent" it happens all the time!!!

Guys trying to do the big break, and bending thier cue.

Its funny how these types of guys in my area talk big, but then always ask for huge spots when someone takes them up on gambling.

HA HA HA..bending the cue...man...you brought back some memories...the color of money cost me my first shaft on one of my first cues..it was a sneaky pete by Mecuie(dont mind the spelling it is 1:21am and i didnt want to look it up) but i was at Q-Masters in Va beach..and i was playing my cusion..who i could beat the piss out of at will..well hey i was at Q-Masters.home of the US Open so hell i decided to show off...had not long ago watched the movie Color of Money...he he ..i even shouted "On the Snap" I bent the shaft during my break..tried to bend it into a circle..ha ha and crack...splinters and sawdust went every were..im sure the guy next to me thought.."You Puttz" ....but hey i had my one idiot moment.. i deserve a rep point for that story...ha ha ha

Perfect Vincent look-alike

A few years ago I went down to Hard Times Bellflower, and there was this guy who looked to be in his early-mid 20's, he looked ALOT like Tom Cruise when he was younger, and he played real good too. He had the Vincent attitude also, except for twirling his cue like a sword. That was the first time I went there, so I figured he was one of the house pros. I've been there alot of times since and haven't seen him or heard of him again. My friend said he was from out of town looking for action, and he beat Morro for a few hundred that day.

I pretend to be him sometimes, makes the creeps at the bars come out of the woodwork to beat me..;)

Yup, I got a friend that plays very little but runs out every time. If I miss, games over. I got so sick of racking, I told him when we play form now on you rack one, I'll rack one, it makes it a little easier on the back.
