Exotic Ferrules ?

This may have been suggested in the past.. if so please forgive me !

Since out-of-the-box thinking is becoming more and more common in the world of cuemaking these days, we have seen alot of interesting designs and materials incorporated in cuebuilding in the recent years...

My question to ALL fellow AZ'rs is:

What are the most unusual ferrule materials you have on your cues or have seen on other's cues???

And what are some interesting ideas on using exotic and different materials as ferrules ???

I'm not asking this to be entertaining, I am willing to experiment with ANY suggestions that's applicable and who knows.... Mabey I can install it on your cue after testing it out !

This should be very interesting due to the very imaginative and intelligent group we have here in the world of AZ Billiards....

All suggestions welcomed no matter how ridiculous it may sound becasue that's how successful concepts are born....

One suggestion

I have yet to have ever seen a Delrin ferrule. I see lots of Delrin butt caps but never a ferrule. I have often wondered what the playability characteristics of Delrin would be like as a ferrule.

Here's the main reason why delrin isn't used as ferrules... due to the composition of delrin and it has an oily sort of feel to it... and that makes it very difficult to glue or hold finish... so most of the time when delrin is called for we end up threading it on or scoring it so roughly for the glue to bite that it makes it a pain in the ass to use anywhere theres constant pounding on it... that's why ferrules are tough becasue you have to use glue on the tip and unfortunatley it doesn't hold up !!!

Great idea though... keep them coming !!!!

Only if it's been used in a strip club by an exotic dancer !!!

i have some yellow micarta.it isn't the old stuff, but to me it plays better with a similar hit.it isn't very exotic, but i like it and put it on everything i do now.

I cut down an old Dufferin snooker cue to make a jumper, and after knocking 3" off the tip end of the shaft, all I could find to use as a ferrule was the jacket off a bantam jack (kinda like that chromed sleeve on a 1/4" headphone plug). It looks very cool because it's got a pattern pressed into the metal (think knurled ring). But I do not recommend this for cue makers, don't forget I am an electronics professional :grin-square:

BTW, it hits a tonne.

Hippo, warthog, walrus. May prove to be hard to find the good stuff at the right
price. You probably have worked with one or more of these.

Eddie, I started right off using exotic materials for ferrules but they were not accepted very well.
Go to Pennstate Industries or Hut pen making supply and look at all the exotic materials they offer to pen makers ... a pen is about the diameter of a ferrule.

I tried some of the acrylic and some people liked them but the hard core players did not.

I once had a shaft with a cueball ferulle. It hit pretty hard. I've also seen black ferulles made from an 8 ball. I used the shaft with a white diamond tip on my break cue. Ka-Boom!!!!.

I do a little repair from time to time. I had a ball banger ask me to build him a cheap sneaky shaft one time. I decided to play a joke on the guy and build something stupid. I installed a ferrule then inch and half long and then drilled half way down added another piece of an old shaft 1 inch long and then added another ferrule. So then you had a ferrule one inch down had another ferrule. We all got a good laugh from this the guy played with it for a while you could get some unbelievable english on the ball.

some of ferrule ideas are pretty good !!!

Do any of you have any pics of ones made from columbian "tagua nuts" or a very hard woods or possible some type of bone other than the typical ???

I have seen a burtain spain with them, customer bought it from Burtain and claimed they were original.

i bet they would hit nice.i like a softer quieter hit on mine so i think i would like them.they have a hardness of about 15 points under LBM on the Rockwell M scale, for reference G-10 is about 10 points higher than LBM.
