Ghorst and Filler will meet, providing neither side gets knocked out. Who do you like?

Based on current form, it's a coin toss. Both have been brilliant of late. That said, one must note that at Derby City, Filler beat Gorst in the Bigfoot ten-ball final and Filler also finished higher than Fedor in nine-ball. Specifically, Josh reached the nine-ball final before falling to Sanchez-Ruiz.

Very slight edge to Filler.

I'd probably take Ghorst. Wasn't impressed with the recent match Filler/Niels.

Wow! Filler rates as one of the most consistently great players we've seen in a long, long time.

At Slovenia, in his last three matches, he beat Niels (Fargo 813 puts him 16th best in the world), Souquet (Fargo 791, a living legend and BCA Hall of Famer), and Sanchez-Ruiz (Fargo 827 puts him fourth best in the world). In July, he won gold at the World Games. In May, he won at the World Pool Masters and won again at the UK Open. At Derby City in January, he won the 10-ball and finished 2nd in the 9-ball.

You're not easy to impress, Bill. Josh is plenty beatable, especially by Gorst, but by my reckoning, you are entitled to 6/5 odds on the money.

The US Open won't be the same without you, my friend. Hope you're well.

With you stu, I'll take 6/5 since I'm not there.
Wasn't interested in betting, with you tho it'll be fun.
$60/$50
Tho next year there's better than a 6/5 chance I'll be there.

filler has a slight edge, going by matchroom stage success overall and also more big table success this year. gorst has won a lot this year (understatement i guess), but much of it has been barbox and one hole.

Many sports (golf, tennis, snooker) benchmark success by performance at majors. By that benchmark, Filler has edge over Gorst past few years even though to be fair, Gorst was sidelined this year because of Russia ban.
That is good long term assessment of who is better player over a period of time in history but not a good predictor of who is better player of a future match.
To predict who will win a match especially between 2 players of equal calibre, it may be more relevant to look at short term factors (such as form, mental state, confidence before and during the event, who is breaking better, who has better or tougher draw, who has more main TV table time etc).

I will take 5 players only - way the worst of it - against the rest of the field.

SVB, Jayson Shaw, Chang Jung Lin, Joshua Filler and Albin Ouschan for $100. You can have the other 251 players.

A foolish bet, but something to sweat. Only the first to responder will be the lucky person. The only exception is

if 1 of my 5 players do not play, I get to replace them with Eklent Kaci. :)

Uncle Robert,
That's a good poke. You only need to sweat:
Fedor, Carlo B, The Spaniards, The Greeks, Kaci (if you don't snag him), The Ko's, Neils, The Rest of the Filipinos, Maybe a rejuvenated Appleton. It's almost a pickem.

As discussed in the other US Open thread, this is a great coin flip bet. The only question is, are you feeling lucky?

I can't ever remember a year in which there was this much competition for Player of the Year in pro pool. It's October and yet the picture is far from clear. Here is a year-to-date review.

Josh Filler
Won the DCC 10-ball, World Pool Masters, UK Open, and won gold at the World Games. He got silver at the Derby City Classic 9-ball and Premier League Pool.

Shane Van Boening
Won the World Pool Championship gold and European Open silver.

Albin Ouschan
Won the Premier League Pool and European Open. Won silver at the World Pool Championship.

Fedor Gorst
Played some of the best pool ever seen at the Derby City Classic and tops the money list despite diminished opportunity to compete due to the Russian ban.

Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz
Won gold at the Derby City Classic 9-ball and at the World Cup of Pool, and managed silver at the UK Open. He's the #1 ranked player on Euro-tour, as well.

With the US Open 9-ball and the International 9-ball both to be played within the next month, I think all five of these are still in contention for Player of the Year. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, but Filler is surely the leader for Player of the Year to this point.
