fargo ratings aren't very good or accurate

What a thread, it's like a pissing contest better yet....it's like Congress the past 8-10 years. It seems to go nowhere, but..........it's going. If ya don't like it, create a better one. Personally I would put the ball in a bookies hands, or a true gambler/player such as Cardone then post up.

So a person that knows less than nothing about Fargo Rate starts a thread titled,"fargoratings aren't very good or accurate."

I say less than nothing because he says, "The only thing I know about fargo is that I guess you have to have 500 matches to be rated." So the only thing he knows is a guess and it is wrong.

Some of the knockers make the argument that so and so would not like the action giving up the difference that Fargo Rate Fair Match predicts. An even match is tough action. Not many gamblers want that kind of action.

I would guess, based on the name Fargo Rate, that it is a rating system and not a handicap system. However accurate ratings can help setting a fair handicap.

Fargo Rate is the most accurate rating system I have ever experienced and can only get better with more data. I have experienced a 20 point swing in my ratings. All of which I can understand based on my performance in various events. At one point my rating was higher than a local player that I felt played a little better than me. Even though he had 500 games in the system he was rated lower than I expected. Well I just chalked that up to his performance in rated events versus his performance in local unrated events. In the last year of play his rating has come up and is much closer to accurate. Mine has gone down and it too is probably closer to accurate now. However my highest rating gives me something to aim for. My goal is to meet or exceed that rating in the future.

A big thank you to Mike Page for being so patient with the uninformed knockers and for Fargo Rate.

the devil is in the details on this stuff.

There is nothing, really, to stop someone from

pay, dump
pay, dump
pay, dump
pay, dump
pay, dump
etc...

But remember influence on ratings depends in a big way on the number of games you play. If you are entering cheap tournaments, there are short races and you are not playing many games --maybe 8-12 games for a two-and-out tournament.

When you show up and play for that one event that matters to you, you play enough games to overshadow all of these.

When Fargo Ratings show up in any new area, there is always this discussion, and a few people who tell a few people who tell us about how hey are going to try to do this. We have actually tagged people and watched their performance, and we have ways of detecting anomalous performance as well. Despite the talk, we just haven't seen it. Once Fargo Ratings become the norm in an area and become widespread, these discussions tend to go away...

Can a player ask to not be included in the Fargo ratings so his name doesn't appear on the list?

You should ask Mike, but I doubt he would exclude anyone as correct data only helps

Would it be fair to the opponent for FargoRate to exclude?

It wasnt to sneak into tournaments it was for gambling purposes. Not that the data wasnt there but that they didnt want it public.

It does look like at least one is back on there now.
