14.1 has been my favorite pool game for years. I have tournaments every month.. I am thinking about having a 14.1 tournament using just one rack with a race to 8, first one to make 8 balls wins, best out of three games. Do any of you have any thoughts on this?

All of my good players enjoy playing 14.1.

Thanks for your help.

I'm good with this, but make sure you properly allow for scratches. If I take two intentionals, do I then need to make 10 points, or need I only outscore my opponent in the rack. Does a three foul lose the rack?

Well, that's not 14 and it's not .1. Maybe "Str8" pool or "6-Pocket." Are you thinking about this just as a way to introduce neophytes to the game, or a way to have a really quick "straight" tournament? I doubt that your good players, who already enjoy 14.1, would find much fulfillment in what you propose. But it might be fun once or twice (with a longer race -- i.e., more games in the match).

Play to 20. Then it starts to become straight pool.

you may want to study rules of the game from the past called "10-20". There are a couple of youtube videos of it I recall.

Another way to play fast 14.1 (and not modify the game's spirit) is best-of-three sets, yes, but a race to 25 each. Playing to 25 you are certain to enter into the second rack, so proper secondary break will be required.

Without a break shot to turn over into the next rack, I agree, it has nothing to do with 14.1. Maybe call it 8.0? Or 6 pocket? Most C players can run 8 balls. B players will most likely always get out. There is no challenge, whatsoever, for players of A Skill level, or above, in this proposed game.

Yeah, when I was about 5 years old, I used to play Str8. Whoever made 8 balls first won. Like 1-hole, if you scratched, you brought a ball up and lost a point. If you pocketed a ball on a scratch, the pocketed ball and another ball came up. Honestly, it gets to a point where it's so much like 8ball, you might as well be playing 8ball.

Forgive my ignorance but can some explain the concept of equal offense, I'm new to 14.1 but enjoy the game very much. As a c player I can usually get a couple 15-20 ball runs in a race to 100 and it seems to be an ever so slight equalizer against a strong A who I play with every Sunday

Instead of what you were thinking, why not just play 10 ball racks & rules and count the points.
The game of 14.1 requires more points to the match to even be fair. !50 points is standard but you could try 90 point matches......(6 racks by one person).......short races under 60 points are way too short and someone gets hot and runs 25-30 balls and the match is half over in one inning.

That's why the U.S. Championship was formerly played as a race to 2500 points back in the days of Ralph Greenleaf and Willie Mosconi et al. Too many luck factors in a short race and that's why those past champions played until it was indeed "The last man standing."..........150 points per game in a race to 2500 points total........Mosconi was not only the greatest to ever play the game of pocket billiards but he also possessed the stamina & endurance of an iron worker.
