Oh well, doubting thomas is everywhere. I've spent the time to figure this shot out and at least I know its possible, though tough. Kudos to you for doing it so well!
I must mention that the exact cue ball size and density does make a difference. If you don't believe me, try it with two object balls (I suggest 11-15 since they are used the least).
One question for you td873: I found that on slightly worn cloth, this shot is actually easier with the object ball on the head spot. Did you notice this? The cue ball will curve a little bit due to cloth effects. Shooting towards the foot spot, this makes it harder, towards the head rail bends the cb towards the cut. This phenomenon is explained in banking with the beard.
