Favorite cuemaker for finishing a Rounceville or John Davis blank

When you get a finished cue it is pretty much impossible to know who is responsible for poor quality sometimes. Points can both be corrected to even out while turning, made uneven, or completely wiped off. A standard full splice has points that are are just as thin as they are narrow. More than one classic cue builder was an expert with a sharpie!

I have read that Davis has gotten picky about which builders he will sell blanks to just because their work can help or damage his reputation. Although Davis isn't selling the blank directly, a phone call to him after a builder is tentatively selected might reveal if the builder is on the Davis preferred list. Not that every cue builder that builds quality cues is on the Davis list but if one is you can be pretty sure he will do a quality job.

Hu, the biggest dealer for John Davis is Martin with Superior Cues. Unfortunately John Davis passed away last year and the back up stock is dwindling. I was lucky enough to get a blank and have it finished by Rick Howard. I also had to trade in my first blank for a different one because Rick didn’t like the first. It definitely was a flaw in the blank on the reverse point. It could have been used to make a wrapped cue but that’s not the style I like. I think the sharp reverse points are even cooler and harder to do well.

Do you have pictures of the blank you’re wanting finished?

These are a few pictures of all the Super Billiards Expo blanks that Andrew Rounceville just posted for sale. The one I bought is the fifth cue from the left. The handle is Camatillo with white, thin black and green veneers with an ebony front.

Thank You! I had some major distractions of my own and somehow missed or forgot John died. His death is a major loss to the cue builders world. Some blanks do anticipate being used to make wrapped cues as you mention.

I'm sorry to hear about John. It is like it just happened a few minutes ago for me.

Haven't seen much about Kelly yet but thank you for the recommendation. I will check out his site.

Here are two Rounceville blanks that Kelly finished out. Mine is the one with the inlays. Fit and finish are exceptional, play is great. His Tomahawk ferrule is sweet. He was a pleasure to work with on this unique (and I believe fun) cue.

Also, he has arranged his set up so that he can work on the full cue, so that all inlays are perfectly aligned between shaft collar and butt.

If you can get on his list, you won't be disappointed.

Very beautiful work. I went on Kelly's website and then got in touch with him. He is backed up with new orders until at least this summer. We definitely will work together to build a cue though. His full splice work is awesome. I also like the tomahawk material. I have a couple shafts with it already. Thank you for the imput!

When I bought my Davis blank a few months ago from Superior cues I was warned: you'd be surprised how many cuemakers don't know how to turn down a blank.

They gave me a few recommendations and I went with Paul Drexler.

Love to see the finished cue Lou.

Dang, being backed up is the curse of doing great work.

Cheers,

You won't be disappointed.

Kelly Peterson, aka MVP Cues is my pick. He finished my rounceville blank out for me. I love it and shall not ever sell it.

Edit:. Kelly is trustworthy and his communication is second to none in the cue making business as far as I know. If I ever do another cue project, it will be with Kelly.

Amen. KP is a great guy.

Are you keeping it old-school simple or are you adding some bling?

Its a full spice ebony blank.

Soooo: ivory joint; stitch rings to match the light blue in the veneers; no wrap -- oil finish -- and an ivory Hoppe ring.

That sounds really nice.

I looked at his ebony blanks many times over the years and regret not jumping on one I saw a couple years back.

The pinnacle of his work, IMO, are his Ebony on Ebony 5 veneer blanks. I have a 5 veneer Ebony into BEM
