Favorite One Pocket Shots

Here is one of my all time favorite one pocket shots...it comes up quite often and it is an easy shot to execute and can be a game winner. Either you are gonna make the 9 ball and start a run or you are going to move balls your way and leave very little.

I was going to post this shot, until I saw you already had. I don't play one-pocket very often, so I don't know nearly as many go-to moves as a serious one-pocket player does, but ever since I learned to look for this shot at the beginning of a rack, I'm amazed how often it comes up. Hit well, it's a very good safe, often limiting return-safe options, pushes a LOT of balls toward your side, and sometimes you make a dead ball in the stack, or carom the banked ball off the stack into your pocket. In the words of Michael Scott, it's a win-win-win.

On my example I would of course rather shot the 5-ball in a match, but I was just "throwing" balls out on the table so I could show you my shot:)

BTW: I LOVE THIS THREAD

That was some great execution on the first shot!

The kiss is too high risk IMO with this layout.

Yes, there is a kiss on this shot. I try to send the object ball in close to the corner and the cueball farther away from the corner so that they at least don't share the same path for that one short segment near where they cross paths (the segment after the cueball's first rail).

For me, it depends on the score. If I need either two or three balls, I'm shooting the three railer. If I need one, I'm bunting behind the two balls.

This is the best part of One Pocket I enjoy: coming up with a personal creative solution in a difficult situation. Reverse the attack in the matter of few moves. I really look at them as a form of artist expression.

I have seen many shots, here is one shot by my friend Curt that just came to mind now:

Steve Booth of OnePocket.org has put together some interesting shots which might be very interesting for you to check out:

although a great shot if perfectly executed, this shot is a little to dangerous in my opinon. A soft kick behind the 5 will put your opponent in a bit of a jam and you've still got the 10 on you side to keep him from going up-table. Besides, you may get a kiss on this shot, which would spell disaster.

shot 1 is an excellent play if perfectly executed, but if not you destroy your position, which is excellent, having 2 balls on your long rail. I prefer to band the 5, drawing the cb into the 11, thus hiding all balls from your oppenent and pinning him to the stack.

My reply would be to kick softly into the stack and owe one. Think taking an intentional here would be well worth it.

I agree Patrick. Very useful shot that is overlooked by weaker players. I am gonna hit your spot with some speed. I would also probably choose to go into the 7 and the 4 in the spot. It makes the escape harder.

And draw a little more so that the rack is hidden from the CB. That way there is no draw shot off the edge of the rack.

here are two more

A ball first ticky to clean things up a bit. Just don't hit too deep under the second ball.

A two-rail bunt safe / foul to try and retain the advantage when you need several balls.

Franky.....I don't love your first shot - too much scratch risk for too little gain......Your second shot though, imo, is absolutely the right shot - I shoot that shot, or variations of it anytime they come up.

PS, You should also post these shots of yours, yonder down the web @ onepocket.org - it's a good place for them..........Ghost

I would play the 1st ticky to sit under or behind the 10, that scratch like the ghost says is a very real possibility, especially with my gorilla touch.

This is a handy little shot I learned from Buddy Hall.

Cue Ball - (Top reverse into the pocket-point at medium speed)

Hey Blackjack, I typically would play this shot the same way as you described, but was shown last night now to play this shot using a draw english instead of top english and it seemed more natural. Since the CB is snug in the pocket against the rail, you stroke down with a draw stroke sorta thru the rail/CB aiming almost at the opposite point and the CB will roll back quicker and more accurately to the opposit corner pocket then with top english. I never would have thought to play it this way, but will in the future. Especially on a table with bad points. Just a suggestion if you haven't tried it this way. :)

Great thread!!!
This shot is also great. I can't make both at the same time, but pretty often one of them will go.

If you play this same shot with upper right english, the 1 ball will 1 rail bank back up in the upper right corner by where you are shooting over. Different variation. :)

Ya the scratch is definitely there. I like firm speed on the ticky when there is 1.25 ball space or less between the ticky ball and the rail. More space and I play it your way without a doubt. I know I can still scratch with a 1.25 ball wide space though, its just much less likely.
