Favorite Places to go after the Poolroom Closes?

The Red Kettle?

The kettle for sure...

OK, this ain't pool but calcuttas were involved and a stop at a restaurant when the dealing was done. A partner and I had an eighteen wheeler and my wife and I had taken a load of alfalfa to the biggest match track in the state at the time, Acadiana Downs, just below Lafayette LA. Good times, crazy cajuns, wild betting, and I sold most of a truck load of hay at a nice profit. Tired puppy at the end of the day and we hadn't eaten. First thing resembling a restaurant on the way out was a Red Kettle. Not quite what I had in mind, covered in dust or not I had a nice piece of cow craving going on.

Room to park the eighteen wheeler made the decision and I pulled in. We went in and ordered steaks. I favor mine medium rare but all too often when you even mention rare they toss the steak up near the light a couple times and throw it on the plate so I ordered medium, my wife ordered medium well.

When the steaks came they weren't even warm in the middle and they were tougher than old boot leather. When the waitress came by I held my steak out on my fork. "Give this thing a shot of penecillin and put it back on the track!" Now I know what happened to the horses that didn't run well.

Bug Tussels

Dave, Bug Tussels in Culman Alabama home of the 64 oz steak.

I ordered the special Two 18 oz New York Steaks for $7.95. Mash Potatoes with gravy, green beans, corn on the cob, chilli beans, stuffing, salad and bread. Oh by the way the food was great.

The owner raised his own cattle and was proud of his food. He was found of saying the Alabama football team eats here.

Take Care, Barney

Barney,

This is so funny. I saw you mentioned something about 1-pocket tips in another thread but didn't make the connection, I gave mine away. Not one of our better purchases, huh? :o

By the way, that's a lot of steak. Thanks for your post.

An honarable mention goes to the Oak Park Grill on 8 mile just off Coolidge (kind of across from Top Hat, but on the Oak Park sid of 8 mile, not Detroit side). Not open 24 hours but certainly qualifies as a greasey spoon worthy of mention. We used to go there after a long night at the Rack (1/2 mile away), which was open 24 hours. Great ham and eggs with them cutting the ham steaks off a humongous piece of ham w/bone.

Quick funny story: Boston Shorty was in town for a 3-cushion tournamnet at Cushion n Cue and after the play was over he wanted to go the the Rack to see if there was any action so I took him. There was none so after the evening was over and it was morning, I took him to the Oak Park Grill for breakfast. We sat at the counter and watched the cook cut the ham steaks for our meal, when he reached in his mouth and pulled out a big piece of gristle and tossed it. I thought Shorty was going to faint, it was hilarious. He loved the breakfast by the way.

Ok, that's all I got, the rest is up to you all to keep this going.

Thanks for the memories...

Dave, whenever we go back to Detroit there are 4 places we HAVE to go:
Coney Island
Buddies for pizza
Peking house in Royal Oak for Chinese
Green Lantern at 12mile and John R for subs.
Never go back without eating at those places.

Tom,

I'm with you on 3 of the 4, never been to Green Lantern. It is now on my list! We had our parent's 60th anniversary party at the Peking House.

Ate at that place about 4 million times......
..late night it was Greek Town for me.

on the road when I didn't know the area......
..it was truck stops for me..good wholesome food.
I loved smaller towns where they still had real diners.....
...they were like eating at your aunt's place

I hated the tourist traps...tended to spend too much on the decor....
..and not enough on the food quality

My favorite place to go after the pool hall closed was always back to my house. The beer fridge was always full and we can keep playing pool on my table in the basement. Many times we wondered why we started at the pool hall in the first place.

The Waffle House, coffee, eggs, pork chops and more coffee. The only place you could get a meal at 2 or 3 am. That was in Cincinnati.. now that I live in California, there isn't a Waffle House in this time zone.

Denny's is about the only choice for a meal at 2am. And, Denny's is ok, but it's not a Waffle House.
