Favorite Pool Movie?

Let's see there was THE HUSTLER, and then there was........Let me see......okay.......well there was........NOTHING else worthy of note.

there truly is only one movie to mention here, and that is The Hustler. On the other hand we are fortunate enough to have a movie that is Perfect in every detail! That movie is my favorite movie and that is not only because it is about pool but also owing to Paul Newman's utterly perfect acting, the story that is very well composed and maybe not many share this opinion with me but I really like the love-story part too...:embarrassed2:

The best movie ever for me.

I'm sorry but Poolhall Junkies was absolutely horrible!!!! Just because it may be about our favorite sport, doesnt make it a good movie. I highly doubt basketball fans think Shazaam was a great movie just because Shaq-daddy was in it.

Horrible is awfully harsh

It may not have been a very good "pool movie", but it was a hilarious flick about a small group of misguided friends jackin' around. I'm sure there are quite a few of us that were in similar circles during college years. Not all movies are realistic, my only real complaint was the frequency of f-bombs.

Man thats a sad statistic. 6 whole movies, one episode of the Twlight Zone, 1 episode of the Honeymooners W/J/Gleason and one episode of the Flint Stones. and some movie thats MIA in a cold film storage lost forever. All this after 80 years-can it really be worse??? Does Hollywood hate us?

You forgot about the "Fancy Eatin' Table" in the Beverly Hillbillys

"Where was poker in the firmament of sports and television for the last 30 years? It was actually well below pool in popularity. And then something happened and it boomed. The same thing could happen in pool, today, tomorrow or next year".

Sorry Jay, can't agree. All you need for poker is a table and a 40 wat bulb. Pool tables are expensive and take up a lot of space. And I love the game just as much as you do. I just don't play it as well.

Dave Nelson

i gotta repectfully disagree. i don't think that is what seperated poker from pool in terms of poplarity. IMO, i think it has to do w/ 2 things; poker being able to played online unlike pool, and everyone can get a general idea of how to play poker from watching it on tv, not well, but a rough idea - unlike pool where you actually have to be at the table to learn how to play, plus it takes a while longer to get a good stroke goin... just my .02:rolleyes:

The Hustler was certainly the all time classic, but below are how I would rate what I have seen:

The movies are rated by Stars!

1) The Hustler - ****

2) The Color Of Money - ***

3) The Baltimore Bullet - **

4) Super Cue Men - **

5) Pool Hall Junkies - *

6) Chalk - 0 - I think the Movie Sucked, worst of all
time.

7) The Player:

Where's "Stickmen"? I have that as #1 myself. Well, maybe #3. Hustler & The Color of Money are really hard to beat. But Pool Hall Junkies was pretty lame.

I should have added Stickmen, I just forgot about it. Thanks for reminding me, I would have given it two stars any though.

Take Care

The Worst Two Pool Movies ever made were "Shooting Gallery" and "Virgin Pockets".

"Racing with the moon" has one HELL of a pool shooting scene!!!! It goes for about 10 minutes. Check it out.

The Hustler

All others pale in comparison....Oh yeah there was a boom in pool shortly after its release. But it did not bring on the hay days of pool. Those were seen during the 1930`s , so I`ve been told

It would be hard to do what everyone wants. Lets face it, while we all love the billiards we play, but its not for everyone. Hollywood is out to sell, and a movie in depth about pool is just gonna confuse the mass public. The closest we can get is love stories like the hustler, or movies about finding yourself ie Color of Money. The rest end up like Pool Hall Junkies, which my friends loved, stickmen which was outrageous, and a good film in its own way, or like Turn the River and Shooting Gallery, which you can file however you like.

FWIW, Turn the River was an awesome movie. Not the greatest pool movie, but a great story and Famke Janssen was great in it.

Yeah, what jay said and johnny right on! Im not ashamed of this sport or game whatever you want to call it. This game has helped me in so many positive ways even in other aspcts of my life. I like it for what it is lets not change it please.

tonight/tomorrow

Hi Folks,

I wish I had more to contribute these days but...

Heads up, "The Hustler" is on AMC at 3:30 AM...

I suspect most folks either own it, or have had their fill of it for now, but in case someone wants to, or hasn't seen it, enjoy...

Just watched "Turn the River" on ppv..

Can't really call it a 'pool movie', rather a low budget, gritty slice of life with a bleak outlook and with a little pool thrown in. Good acting and surprise,surprise..one-pocket is the featured game of choice.
Regrettably Famke, whom I like very much, has lost a little of her unique beauty ( hopefully as commanded by the director and make-up artist.)
I don't regret the $4.00 ppv fee.

1) The Hustler
2) The color of money

imo pool hall junkies was one of the worst movies I've ever seen (pool related or not). "wait! I just bought YOUR shot. now its MY shot" - that was absolutely hilarious.

While it may not "hold back pool," it would be welcomed to have a movie with a different storyline - and one with a focus on skills. Say, a young man who works a day job and with the support of family, friends and a coach, manages to "rise-up" from small town America, to win the World 9-Ball Championship. A storyline full of character development with a "come-from-behind" theme and superior pool skills. Now that's movie I'd like to see!!
Of course let's not forget that the greatest boon ever to pool was a downbeat movie about a "Hustler". We should only hope that lightning could strike twice someday.

I can't rate this movie, because I have seen it. The Movie was made in 1971 and stared Minissota Fats. It was only shown to my knowledge twice at film festifals. There are no known copies left in existance to my knowledge, if anyone knows where a copy may be please contact me.

Thanks Craig
actually its was Rudolf Wanderone Jr. who was know as "New York Fats". "Minnesota Fats" is a fictional charactor in the novel the Hustler that was based on him.

Absolutely agree!! I thought it was sickening! TCoM is second after the Hustler by quite a margin. The acting was no where near as good, it appeals to the younger crowd because it's a color film and occurred in more {at the time} modern atmosphere.
