I think it's very cool that an AZ room has the support from Greg. The concept of having a place that AZ'ers can meet each other and mix with the pro pool world is a great way to get all kinds of people together and generate some good talk about pool, the tournament, and those that support it.
This year, it seemed more than any previous year, an overwhelming number of non members knew the tables were free and were rudely bullying members away. I would have thought the changes in the location of some of the rooms would have helped, but it didn't seem to at all.
The AZ room, when it works, is a win-win for everyone. I'm still friends with many people that I met there for the first time, especially after chatting with them on AZ. This year, I didn't get a chance to say hello to anyone new. It was as if asking for a screen name could start a fight.
Even with it's current location, I think the room could serve it's purpose well and be the place that it was meant to be for everyone involved, with only a few minor adjustments.
There may have been a good reason that it took so long this year to announce that there was going to actually be an AZ room, but this year was more late than ever and I believe that may have undermined enthusiasm somewhat. The earlier the announcement the better.
The system for distributing the badges desperately needs to be changed. Each badge must be either directly handed or mailed to the member in some fashion. If this means an early cutoff of donations, so be it. I don't think anyone serious about attending has a problem with that. Leaving the badges in the room unattended does not work.
Last but not least, bring back the "Room Goons". I think special badges should be made for someone who volunteers to be a room goon. In exchange for their "protective services"

their playing privileges should be given to them free of charge. I might also stipulate that to qualify as a room goon, you must have at minimum quantity (TBD) of posts either on AZB or OP.org.
I had the good fortune of sitting down for the first time with Greg and a couple other AZ'er last year and I don't think anyone will ever meet a more enthusiastic supporter of the game of pool. DCC is a terrific event to attend because it uniquely blends so many different aspects of the pool world together. The AZ room, when successfully operated, compliments that vision. Let's make this work!
