Feedback Sought: Putting A Pool GC III in My Office Waiting Room

So as I may have shared previously I'm a Therapist with a specialty in treating in Substance Use Disorders. I have a Group Practice with some long time colleagues, but the new office space we're taking is mine. The waiting room is ridiculously huge...SO, I figured, why not put in a table? After I decided to "go all in" I was surprised to find out that so many of my Pt's and fellow professionals love to shoot pool. I know Pool gets a bad rap sometimes, but I figure why not use it in a positive way for a better therapeutic experience on the part of my Pt's.

Substance use disorders?... Centennial ball sets bring good money.

I would stock it with lower quality stuff, but seems like a good idea.

Pool shouldn't get a bad rap. Geometry and power considerations? What's not to love. It's like a 2-dimensional dogfight.

I know the work is serious, but really substance abuse and pool go so well together now in pool halls, may as well make it official LOL If the person I am playing is not drunk, they are likely going outside every other set to smoke weed. Sometimes both.

I think it's a great idea.

I also think that a pool player who is a substance abuse therapist is a great thing - lots of people in our pool world who could use the help, and "one of our own" might be easier to see. And now they know they can play a few racks before their appointment!

Do you have a cure for this substance use disorder? I would be willing to pay for it and make it available to the general public for free. You know it causes global warming and it hurts the whales too, so it's for a good cause.

When I was younger, we used to go to a Barber Shop on Camp Bowie Blvd in western Ft. Worth. He had some lady bartenders & some pool tables... the place was a beehive of activity.....

This could be the indicator that your therapy is working....
...when the chalk is being placed blue side up...they're doing just fine.

I like the pool table idea...it's therapy for a lot of people....
...and it always tells the truth...you can't con the cue ball.

I think It's a great idea, my first choice would be a Diamond 7 foot table, which would allow less skillful patients a chance to enjoy themselves also.

Great idea... It's kind of like the boys and girls clubs getting pool tables. It will help keep them off the streets and encourage them to have some sort off hobby to look forward to when they visit.

I don't drink or do drugs other than the stuff prescribed for diabetes, high blood pressure, and AFIB. Do I have to start in order to play in your office?

good idea if you have the room.

I imagine this could be a business write off (furniture expense) so get a good table, and a couple of Ginacues :grin-square:

Also could be used as a therapeutic activity for the clients.

I think I qualify...I was drugged once....damn near fifty feet.

Good idea. Just make sure there is plenty of room, so that players will not be walking close to people just trying to sit there and wait.

My haircut place has an 8 foot in the room with the barber chairs. But I've never seen anyone use it. It would be awkward shooting so close to people sitting getting a hair cut. The table is mainly there to make it look more like a guys club.

I have always loved shooting pool, but I didn't truly get bitten by the bug until I was a Mental Health Worker, working on an inpatient unit that had a full size table. You could get a lot more accomplished sometime shooting a game of 8-Ball with a Pt than you could sitting down formally.

I LOVE the game. So many of my Pt's love the game. As many have said here it's the great equalizer. The game smashes barriers and can bring about almost instant fellowship. The game also will "pull your covers" as they say...which I believe is what Bert Gordon was referring to when he was talking to Fast Eddie in The Hustler about character beating him and being a Born Loser.

I've always thought if someone was going to give up, 1 Day At A TIme, something they love, something that used to serve a great purpose in their life (at 1 time) then you damn well had better make the treatment part of that effort as fun as possible (with fun not being mutually exclusive to being serious). For me, having a table in the office sets a tone...it certainly speaks loudly to who I am and the culture I want in my sand-box. I firmly believe that'll go a long way towards engaging Pts...and g*d forbid having a little fun along the way.

just that growth plans are always part of the plan, anyways… what do you figure the
games going to be best for therapy?
It isn’t all that unusual having a table in the office, John Wayne had one in their office
when they were putting out oil well fires.

About the chalk on the table down side up; Yes, one at a time and nonchalantly, I would get them gone & out of sight. Of course I carry my own Blue Diamond in my pocket!
