I found this commentary in this match very enjoyable.
I was in the hunt then.

If you want to know what it was like/felt back then, watch this video....

The production, the feel off the times, the crowds respect for game, it's all in there.
The true sport of pro pool was exposed in this Production.

ESPN back then mixed in/used their announcers with the Color Commentator/Buddy.

Prior/Camel Tour?
The pros also at had a Top Tier announcer/Tommy? do their productions.
He evolved and became an integral part of the show, laughing allot during play at the expressions and opinions that pool players have.

You're talking about Tom Kelley. He did the 'Prime Network' telecasts. HOF announcer. He was the USC announcer for 50yrs. He passed in 2016. He was great doing the pool broadcasts. Always talking about making combos. https://abc7.com/university-of-southern-california-usc-announcer-tom-kelly/1404263/

Massey made a ball on the first break we saw,
then kicked the one,hit a rail and earl got up then sat down and massey continued to shoot.
Anyone know why?

There's an old rule that was used that if you missed a shot the incoming player could give the leave back to you.
So in other words if I missed and left you with nothing but a kick you could make me kick at it.

It's more correct to relate that Massey's kick was his (foolish IMO) attempt to luck-in any OB after first sending the one-ball to any rail, and thereby continue to shoot after lucking something in.

Legally that kick was the equivalent of Massey's Pushout and the rule was that the opponent had the right to either accept the layout or pass the "pushout" layout back to the shooter which Earl wisely did -- in spite of the fact that Mike did make the very missable cut. Earl played the percentages, assuming Mike was odds-on to not pocket the one-ball.

Was this ESPN or was this Prime Network?

This particular tournament was unique as it was an all offense, pass back experiment. I believe Roger Griffis won it.

The video Banner....ESPN

I was also there in downtown Los Angles the next week (was in 92 or 91? where Griffis did the dbl dip pro win Reno/CA.
I remember the event almost didn't go off. Room owners were gay, the city I think make em get a last minute permit to allow ''pool players'' in their city.
Those yrs, gays really had it allot tougher.
Thx for the memory.
He is quite a different Rocket :) than Rodney Morris. :)
He smiled like a Cheshire Cat and could get an entire room laughing/lit up from his play and character, and Boy what a TX character he was.
180 out from his peers, even Grady couldn't get em going as much as Rog during play.

Yesterday I was watching axe throwing on ESPN....any monkey could do that

If you really wanted to comment on those particular tables, there was a close up shot of a ball (lower right hand corner) on the foot rail that ALMOST could be back cut...Mikes shot
Notice when Tarzan leans against the table to shoot This Shot.
The table does move. :)
There was a room in Denver yrs ago/Aurora that had All 9 footer Gandys, just like this one.
But hey, I'd rather bitch about Covid ;).

There's a bar here in Tulsa that has axe-throwing. WTF???? Liquor and airborne deadly weapons. Hope they have a REALLY good attorney on stand-by. And i don't want to be anywhere near any fkng monkey(or blondes) chuckin' axes.
;)

Axe Throwing is becoming a "thing". There are a lot pf places around now that have that.

A lot of bearded hipster types at those places usually. I see it as a mini-rebellion from and against being glued to technology and screens all the time.
