Feeling Good About Sportsmanship

I was playing a set of 9 ball and accidentally double hit the cue ball. I picked up the ball and handed it to my opponent. He was shocked that I gave up my shot because he didn't see it. The very same match he went to shoot the 4 and I said "Excuse me sir, the 3 is still up". I thought he was going to pass out. He won those two games, but I left feeling very good.

I won't talk about licking my opponents chalk a couple weeks ago. :)

Just thought I would share.

98% of players wouldn't have done it. I also belong to the 2%, and it makes me feel good
Be proud of that and stay strong.

A pool game is a very cheap way to sell your integrity. But lots of players do it. As I see it, the game reveals true character and you sir are a gentleman.

This is the way the game should be played

This is the way I also play. I always call my fouls. If I'm uncertain wether there was a foul, I'll ask the opponent and go with what ever they feel is rigth. And yes, I've lost games this way. That's just how I think the game should be approached.

Come to think of it, I've seen snooker pros do this all the time. Even when it surely means a loss of frame and possibly the game. Thorsten displayed the same integrity not so long ago. Seeing this kind of behavior always makes me feel good about the game.

I agree with 50% of this. I'm all about playing the game like a gentleman...I always call my own fouls, and it's cost me dearly in the past.

However, if my opponent wanted to shoot the 4 ball with the 3 still on the table, I would totally let him.

I don't feel obligated in the least to help other people learn to count. ;)

Nice to know there are more people like me out there. I would much rather lose a match. Kudos! Telling him he's shooting the wrong ball, I will if we're just playing, not in tournament play though. On the flip side I wouldn't expect him to tell me....in a tournament match. I play 3C and it's an unwritten rule not to tell them if they're shooting the wrong cue ball.

Speaking on behalf of the entire forum, let me extend my hand in gratitude for your outstanding display of honesty and sportsmanship. You have aquitted yourself admirably.
A recent memo from the office of Mr. Wilson, has informed me that a T-shirt has been...what? They don't give out T-shirts? Ever?
Bastards!
Anyway. Nice job NewStroke.

Dan,

If you ever make it over to the house for a few friendly games, I promise to fill the candy jar up with Tootsie Roll Pops so you won't hafta lick the chalk .

I too, in the past at one time or another, have done the very two deeds that you mention. Winning has never been a priority for me, only having fun and enjoying being in the presence of good, friendly people. If I am to expect to find good, friendly people around, then I figure I gotta BE ONE!!!

Most of the time in the two scenarios you mention, I have been the recipient of good sportsmanship when the "shoe was on the other foot". Not always though, but no big deal to me if someone wants to take a "cheap" win (I obviously DO NOT play for money). A friendly game of pool, whether it be league, local tournament, or just "play-for-play", is just not worth getting into a fight over, especially the way people fight nowadays (guns, knives, clubs, etc.) Plus that, at my age, it'd take several weeks for me to fade a hard punch in the noggin :o.

Kudos once again to you my friend! Good luck and good shooting!!!

My mortal enemy, Half-fast Larry and I always play all fouls, honor system. It's the way the game should be played.

Good for you Dan. It's too bad that everyone doesn't see things the same way. I was playing a match last week. Early in the match, I called a foul OB myself that my opponent didn't see.

A few racks later, he broke and had a shot on the one. It was a tight fit because the eight was partially blocking, but it would go. He clipped the eight and it rolled a half inch, but he still made the one. I said, "Ball in hand, right?" He said "I didn't touch the eight", and walked over to shoot the two. I was dumbfounded. I looked around and three other people were staring like, WTF? I ended up losing the match, but I know I did the right thing.

I had an opponent shoot this shot (below). I had left this table and looked at it closely before sitting down. There was NOT a ball's width between the rail and the 8 ball. My opponent shot it quickly and went right onto the next ball.

I didn't say a thing, because I thought it would only turn into a pissing match that could not be won. But I was pissed and seethed for a few racks. I decided I could either let it eat at me, or turn that energy into productive energy. And I did, and I crushed him that day.

The good hit/bad hit situations are some of the most charged discussions in pool.
