Feels like sand

Gentlemen-What do you think this might be? Slate damage or accumulated dirt/chalk?

I looked at a Sport King that cosmetically looks in shape.

I rolled balls in both directions, and the cushions seemed OK. But I noticed a little hop and change of ball direction at slow speed near both side cushions at both ends about where the slate seams would be.

When I rub the cloth at these 'mini road bumps", it feels like grains of sand under the cloth. The cloth may be original? Faded but not damaged. Dust and dirt accumulated under the cushion noses.

Seller not too enthused with cutting the cloth to reveal the slate surface to further inspection.

So-would you take a chance on there being some sort of slate damage that you cannot see?

Could the granules be accumulated chalk over the years or maybe bondo at the seams that may have eroded? Wish I could see under the cloth to tell better.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

Thank you

ps-in case I buy it-I will be disassembling it.-Are the slates doweled or pinned to each other? Do you cut the seam sealer(bondo?) and then 'walk' /wiggle and jiggle the slate toward the ends rather than lift the ends?

Thanks again

Chances are, from what you're describing, it could be plaster that was used to fill the seams and broke down into dust. Hard to really tell until you get it apart though.

A good general rule is to ALWAYS assume that slate is pinned. If there is bondo or glue in the seam, score it until you can pull them apart horizontally. Do NOT lift the ends in case they are pinned to avoid blowing out the slate.

I just recently performed work on a customers table two weeks ago. They attempted to move the table and when they tried lifting the table by the slate, it chipped some of the slate up around the mounting screws.

Another possible answer,

the previous installer put water putty over the mounting screws and it has broken up over the time since the last setup.

I would insist on examing the slate.

Normally you wouldn't find chunks of chalk under the cloth, just alot of chalk dust if the table wasn't maintained properly.

Your too fast Josh!!

slate

im gonna put my money that there is water putty/plaster in the seams and it has broke down over the years....i have seen this many times'
