Female cuebuilders

Laurie Franklin. Vickie Gilbert. Pat Schrager. They may not build the full cue but Vickie and Pat were the inlay artists in their husband's shops and Laurie has kept one of the most sought after cue brands (South West) going after her husband passed away.

Billiards and Beads had a couple of ladies building cues there.

Interesting! But beside the fact that women may work in some cuebuilders workshops: are there some "brands" or names of cues where a woman stands behind as the first responsible, creative head and owner of the workshop?

Annie O. She passed away a few years ago.

Most would not define Annie O as female.

Jana Fields from Texas also built cues for a while.

I know about that. I assumed at some point she legally was as she played on the women's tour for a while. Since you brought it up...

OP, my understanding was Annie O was born male and had a sex change and was legally declared female. You can decide for yourself if she qualifies to be included in the answers to your question.

Ellen Drexler is a HUGE part of PFD Studios and is extremely talented.

Ardie Black, while i'm not totally sure she does any actual cue work has played a huge role in keeping the operation going.

Both Paul and Richard have not been shy about expressing there gratitude where these ladies are concerned.

OK, read the other answers. If she was a man originally, "she" is / was (RIP) in my personal understanding not a real female cuebuilder.

Anybody else as a real female cuebuilder that sold her cues under her name? Seems to be no one real, isn't it?

I don't know about 'most'. I'm sure Annie, her friends and family considered her a woman. Sometimes things aren't just black or white

Pretty black and white, God made you either squat to pee or stand to pee, just because a stander decides to squat doesn't change a thing

Trudy Fuller does the panto work on Judd's cues. One of the best on the panto machine imo.
Mike Bender's wife did his inlays too iirc.
Tad's wife did the wraps, ferrules and tips in his shop for years too.

At this point the answer to the OP's original question is pretty much "No". It takes a very special kind of person to dedicate their life to building pool cues. Most women are way too smart for that.

Women tend to work smarter not harder hence why they tend to use our money to go shopping with lol.

Andy Gilbert's wife does his inlay work.
Bert Schrager's wife did his inlay work.
The ladies at Billiards and Beads built their own cues from scratch. They may still be doing it.
Lauri Franklin owns and runs one of the most popular cue shops around: Southwest.
Jana Fields used to build cues.
I have talked to several others who have their wives do their inlay work. My daughter once said if my son quit she would like to learn the inlay work since she is an artist. My wife cares nothing about pool cues and can rarely run two balls.

By the way I went to Annie O's shop several years ago and he was a very smart cuemaker. His repair methods were really well thought out and his shop was small but well laid out. He had done business with me for years and I always thought he was a woman. He was an early member of our International Cuemaker Association. We once had a member quit in our early days because Annie O got a higher ranking on cuebuilding level achievement. The funny part was that cuemaker was so insecure, that he said if Annie O had a higher ranking than himself that he would never be able to sell another cue. Shortly after we dropped the level rankings.

Richard Harris's wife does the inlay, scrim saw work... Maybe finishing work as well...

All I can get my girl to do in the shop is walk in quietly and scare the bejesus outta me...usually just to say 'love ya'...

I just read an article on Jack Madden from 2005 yesterday and he said his wife does all of the inlay work on cnc in her own room which he compared to a "sewing room"
