I'd like to know what ferrules are now considered the best (staying clean, not breaking, hit *subjective*, etc). What's are the caracteristics of each.

I went on Atlas website and found these:

Titan (used on predators?)
Ivorine-4
Ivory

There's also Saber-T that is interestingme since Kevin Varney seems to like them so much.

Titan is a pretty soft material. Holds up Okay.
Ivorine 4 is a real hard material. Hold up real well.
Ivory is a medium hard material. Watch out. Many things can cause Ivory to crack.
Never used a Saber.

Some batches of LBM have been full of dirt and other contaminants. Nothing like putting a ferrule on, and just as you cut it down to finished size, a nice speck of dirt is visible just under the surface. :D I've also had several of them break, which really shouldn't happen with that material.

titan ferrule

I'm having a local guy make me a new shaft with a titan ferrule & i've never seen or played with one before.

anybody have anything else to add?

Tap, Tap
I don't think Atlas makes it. I still play with ivory but you have to adapt to it. It deflects a little more than LBM but no where as much as ivor-X.

I can tell that also. I have'nt had major issues with It on shafts I've installed them on so far, but I do cap all LBM, because one time I tried making one uncapped, but threaded on a tenon, and while I was tapping the ferrule It split lenth wise, from one end to the other. The bore was'nt overly tight either. seems like capping them makes a big difference, altough I guess even that is not fullproof since one end is still uncapped. I think it's the feel that makes them desirable to some people, It seems to have a nice ping to the material.

> Ivory is an acquired taste, but whether you like it or not,I don't think anything stays cleaner as far as permanently embedded grime and junk. The old melamine, before the reformulation that always seems to affect us,was awesome, people here agree the newish stuff is junk. The old yellow GE Micarta stayed pretty clean too,but took a little more care than ivory. Tommy D.

I have a Titan on my personal cue

I have been playing with it for 8 months now and must say I like the hit. But it does not stay clean easy. I use a turners finish on it, called HUT. It never gets real pretty like Ivory. But the accuracy and hit satisfy my needs. I will try the SabreT on my next shaft I make for me. I bought a few to test it out.
I use the Titan and the IvorineIII for customers shafts, they like both.

Never tried Titan.

I found Ivorine 4 to be too hard for me - both in play & in machining. It's abrasive enough to rapidly dull carbide & I thought I got more squirt than from Ivorine 3 or Aegis 2. I don't like the look of the linen, either.

Ivory is so pretty that I don't care how it squirts but it IS an acquired taste.

Sabre-T machines & polishes nicely but I had a few sleeve type ferrules come loose with yellow glue. I'd recommend either using epoxy or threading them on. Expensive.

The last dozen shafts I made had Elforyn threaded on & I'm pretty happy with it. Squirt is down due to softer material, stays clean, hits solid. Only downside is it doesn't polish to a high shine easily. Kinda looks like the old Schon micarta. Will be trying a few sleeve types soon & expect it to work well with yellow glue.

I have never tried the Elforyn yet, Where do you recommend I get some from Bob? I want to try one on my own cue for testing. I hate to put anything on a cust cue if I have not used it a few months myself. Do you just polish it by using the fine sanding cloth to say 8000 grit, then a turners finish, or what works best so far for you?

Its available from Victor Stein at Blatts Billards. 1-800-252-8855
He will send polishing & care instructions with your order.
Ferrule material comes in 15mm rod & is priced at $32.50 per foot.

Titan ferrules make a strange (different) noise when used in combination with a hard tip?? I always preferred the Ivorine 3, haven't tried the ivorine 4 yet.

Hi Varney,

How do you know if you have Grice Rod materail???

I got some ferrulle material a while back from scruggs when the lbm started to run out. It was all he had left and I think it is Grice! Just, dont know how to tell if it is??? scruggs is into the high end and ivory ferrulles and I was looking for rod for a couple cues! so, he gave me two rod peices. So, Fry could put on a ferrulle for me. Scruggs was scaling back on repair work and had just had his by pass.

Any info on grice is appreciated!

It would of been bought from Prather originally. It looks like Aegis solid rod except very, very clean and with a more ivory colored shade. Hard to tell unless its in my hand. You could send it to me then I could tell you...I promise to send it back if its not Grice.:D
