Filipino triumphs are habit-forming....

State of Denial

The "World 8-Ball Championships" with no American representation! LOL!! SVB, Kirkwood, Bowman and many others play as well or better, the only thing habit forming about the "Philipino Dominance" is believing it..........Marc

Yo, Playsome, that you on the urinal? Thought so, that's why you are in a state of denial!!

Tell you what, if you really believe in what you are mouthing off, pick ANY American pool player, and I will pick an unknown Filipino player and you fan bet whatever you want!!! This way we'll know for sure...

You can pick any players from your list above and call them and ask them if they want to step up to the plate, answer me back and we can set this up. It does not have to be an outrageous amount, but considerable enough to warrant their attention and want to play for the cash.

There is a caveat, though. After you lose, you will stop posting any derogatory comments on this threads.... Agreed?

Be careful what you ask for. On a small table, I would put Jason in the box first. On a big table, Rodney, Johnny and Corey are still tough enough that it would take a first echelon filipino to bring them down. I'm not sure an unknown player can do it. If you're referring to someone like De Luna, Gomez or Garcia. I definitely like Johhny over any one of these three. A player like Gabica would be a good match for him.

I will agree that Ronnie or Dennis or Van Van probably have the edge over any American player.

I don't understand the motivation or purpose of this thread

I don't understand the motivation or purpose of this thread. Are
you just trying to stir up reactions? I just never understood
the bragging concept, or insulting other folks.

Doing so just shows immaturity, and arrogance.

And statements like "then we'll know for sure", concerning
the outcome of a particular match is very far from accurate.
If, for example, some rich and bored American backer decided
to back an unknown American player against all of the top
Fillipino players in succession, and the American won every
match say 13-0, in the grand scheme of things it would not
really mean very much. It would not prove anything or allow
anyone to know anything "for sure", except the outcome of
the match.

In any case, I would really like to know what the motivation
for this thread is.

I just want to second Joey's comment. the thread does sound like lame and corny. in some way, kinda boasty. No offense to whitey, but sniper and bayawak are just commenting on playsome's obvious state of denial. Most Americans won't play the Filipinos unless there is a certain handicap involved. the recent DCC event is just one of the proofs of such. I can't blame some of the posters here if they are that cocky or confident that an unknown filipino player can make an american pro player a run for his money. the guys here know a certain somebody who has that capability. otherwise, they would just be hiding behind their shell if they don't have something to support their statements.

In accordance to your argument about the thread title, I do somewhat agree that it is quite unnecessarily boastful. ;)

You're talking the top echelon players here. Shane may start out with second echelon guys like Roberto Gomez, Jeff De Luna, Edgar Acaba and a few others. No need to start at the top.

Listen, there are 17 year old kids over there who play high speed 9-Ball. They would be top ten players over here. Now Shane can match up with kids like this right now and have his hands full. But I will bet on Shane because he stands up so well for the money.
He needs to plan to be here for at least a month. I've got some kids, 14-18, that'll play him for starters and he's going to need 2 weeks without a repeat opponent. I'm sure he'll enjoy the stay as you did, Jay.

As for the thread itself. I too think it's pretty lame and really not in line with how our "Numero Uno" is. Efren has always been humble and hopefully more members, players and fans alike, will adopt such virtue. This post just reeks of an underlying motive.

Congratulatons to Ronnie, Dennis, Joven, Warren and gaga Gabica.

:) A forum, like its precursor, the fora in the olden days, is a revered place for supposed to be civil and intelligent discussions on varying subjects of the day. It is the area reserved for the inter-mingling of personal opinions.

Whereas before a subject is tossed for deliberations only for the consumption of the elite at the agora (to the consternation of the great majority), nowadays, however, with the advent of the cyberworld, a particular subject is being 'devoured' upon by a seeming array of boundless of participants.

It is understandable as our venue attendees today comes from all aspects of life, and from all corners of the world. The meeting of the minds here are diverse in nature, not only in agrrement to the game of pool but, generally, with other topics too, pool or non-pool related.

It has always been the norm that subjects or participants in a forum has varied point of views on a given issue/subject. As such, no one can really rightfully judge the merit of every post/thread/replies.

To reiterate, In my own opinion, the forum has steadily grown into a flourishing market of ideas. It is healthy since a conglomeration of views are dissected upon.

To sum it up, the forum not only has prospered from a plain pool player's perspective, but into a venue of:

Intelligent discussions
Diverse cultural enlightenment
Reactive media
Proactive arena
Intimidators quarters
Prognosticators
Bullies
Recidivists
Pretenders
Storytellers
Bashers
Weaklings
Comedians
Kowtow-ers
Paranoids
Advertisers
Competitors
Consumers
"Hell-do-I care" readers
Star-struck syndrome sufferers, and what have you...

I rest my case, we'll just play 9-ball and see who chokes....

As a Canadian I have no dog in the fight/pissing match. For every top tier player there are legions of others chasing the dream. It's a economies of scale thing. In the Philippines it's a national pastime and to imply they have any "special" skills is silly. These things go in cycles.

Can the Americans only play basketball? Ask the Dreamteam.
Are the best Hockey players Canadian?
Are the best Rotation players German? I could make the argument.

Even though it's taken a step back in recent years, the best money in the sport is still Men's Snooker. If they could...they would. The money (career):
Stephen Hendry £8,134,585
Ronnie O'Sullivan £4,873,060
Steve Davis £5,426,880[

Add appearance fees and promotions. Convert to UD$ and all above made 15M-30M US$. You think Efren would trade his lifetime earnings for this?

Things go in cycles. I'm of Greek ancestry. We invented the Olympics. Ask us how many gold medals we brought home last time. For those who think the Filipinos are the best in the world I have one thing to suggest. Close your eyes...count to 10 years...the Chinese are coming.

Thanks for the suggestion but we already did that (Close your eyes...count to 10 years) at the start of this century and did something about it. Example was when I and friends first brought Dennis and Ronnie to Cardiff in 2003 for their first exposure to WPC. It was the start of this century that we started preparing (financially supporting) today's current crop of champions because then we saw that the Germans were coming. We again did as you have suggested, a couple of years back, and saw that the Chinese are coming. The current crop can parry the blows for now and for a few more years to come until the in-prep crop of kids, 14-18, get up to speed. Thank you but I assure you that the current group of supporters have laid down very good plans for sustaining the presence of Filipinos in the world arena.

Well

I am sure what Jay has said is right on the mark, but I think that it might be a little disheartening for American and even European players to go up against the 'Puyat team' of Filapino players in all the major tournaments.

Kind of like Boeing trying to compete with Airbus, where Airbus is subsidized by the French government.

The Filapino wins seem to mean something to the government over there, and is a source of National pride. What does an American win mean here? You can not even get it into the Newspaper here in the Sports section unless there is some sidebar to go with it.

The Filipinos are thankful to the Puyats for initiating this and their example brought forth more supporters for the sport. There soon will be more. The National Association's (BSCP) current officials, who made it possible to hold last and this years' WPC is 10 times fold more active and mentally fertile than the previous group who ran it. We have private entities, Puyat Sports, Bugsy's, Visayan and yours truly supporting not only the financial needs but also training regimen for the players. And soon we'll start a Pro League that will get more Filipinos interested and working hard to excel.
