Fillipino dominance?

Sure looks like the Fillipinos can dominate an entire tournament. Out of the reported 13 fillipinos at the Galveston World Classic, two of the main three pro events were won by them (Efren in the one pocket and Ronnie Alcano in the 8-ball) and Warren Kiamico had a chance to win the 10ball if he could have beaten Mika twice. Besides these champions, Alex P., Marlon Manalo, Dennis Orcollo, Jose Parica, Francisco Bustamante, and Ramil Gallegos all placed high in the the pro events. In saying this, I am not taking any thing away from American players. Johnny Archer, Nick Varner, and Earl Strickland all played great. But somehow I dont believe we are producing future champions at the same rate as the Chinese and Fillipinos. I wonder if in 20 years if there will be any American champions to oppose them.............

i don't think you are stumbling on anything that everyone doesn't already know.

Filipinos being good at pool is like white being on rice

but yes... amazing turnout again by the filipinos

Future champs? Dechaine is like 23 and he took 3rd in the 10 ball and just won the world summit of pool. Efren wont play SVB even at 10 ball, cause his break aint as good, and Bartam just won the texas open.

All the filipinos U just listed are older players. the 3 americans I just listed are in there 20's 's so I think were safe as far as future champs go.

Not to mention Sylver ochao and Shane Mcminn who are also great players.

There were no Euro players due to the Euro Tour stop and Portugal event, if there were more players maybe the field would have been more evened out. Don't get me wrong I am not taking anything away from ANY player (I lost to Luat and Efren) I am just mentioning the fact that many strong players were not present due to scheduling conflicts.

Perhaps the explanation is that Filipinos are better able to make a living playing pool than Americans. The money they make goes farther in the P I and therefore more people gravitate toward the sport there.

He's right every philipino that can play was there. Ive never seen so many of the top pinoys in one tourney at one time.

nothing new

@Mike Haines;

this is nothing new, there are many threads on this forum talking about how filipinos can do this at any given tournament in any country. I believe at one us open (or some other major tournament) the final four was three filipinos and ralf souqet.

@TXsouthpaw;

SVB a definate YES! but the other guys you mentioned? I hear Chris Bartram has a lot of gamble. he needs to go over to the Philippines and take on all Filipinos like how Shane has done on more than one trip now.

You also said that "every philipino that can play was there." that's NOT true. what you saw are only the well known, established pros, with sponsors, who are able to get visas to the states without issue. They can't just fly over to the states like how we can just fly over there. They have to apply and hope that their visas get approved by our government. What you saw is just the tip of the iceberg. There are TONS more players who are younger and very very hungry, and have monster games. ask any pro who's been there since Ronnie won World's in 06.

If you search older posts by Edwin Reyes on this fourm I remember him rattling 20 or so names off the top of his head of young pinoys whom you've never heard of that can play anybody in the world. And those are only the ones he could remember.

Its a similar situation in Taiwan. The Chinese have an even harder time getting visas to the states.

Efren's 10-ball break is just fine, makes the 1-ball in the side a good number of times unless it gets kicked out by the corner ball or the ball next to it. He made it 6 out of 9 breaks in our match and it was headed into the side pocket 9 out of 9 times till it was kicked.

From where I was sitting I had the perfect view to see what the 1-ball was doing on his break, he didn't have good cueball position like SVB's break but when the rack is random it's nice to know which ball you are making.

SVB won't play Lee Van Corteza who is younger than Efren because he end up broke after the match!

SVB can play Mr. Corteza all day every day. I watched the last match they played on YouTube and Shane gave away the match it wasn't as if he was outplayed.

I am sure that Mr. Corteza can get played if the situation allows it. There is no player on the planet Earth who can dominate Shane Van Boeing.

The only player who has rattled Shane is Alex in his fantastic come back during their TAR match. Shane however has come back stronger for that experience.

I very much doubt that Shane will turn down the opportunity to play Mr. Corteza. Shane went and played him in his place let's see Mr. Corteza show up and play Shane at Shane's place.

Look, the reason the Filipinos are so strong is that they stay in practice all the time against each other.

Mr. John Schmidt once said that if you took America's best players and put them in the same city and had them constantly matched up against each other then they would be just as strong.

America is much larger and more diverse with a lot more to do. The best players aren't in constant small action against top tier players. If they want to test themselves they have to hand out ridiculous spots, go to regional events where they cruise through the brackets and when they win they barely make expenses.

In the Phillipines top players are matching up every night. Every night.

I think one of the other deciding factors may be that the cost of living is so much lower there than it is here in America. Because money, especially the American dollar, goes so much farther there, one is able to put in more practice time while maintaining their modest lifestyle.

Hmmmmmm......

Eeeewww.....can't say I can agree with that. It's a good guess but no. About 80% of the the people in the Phils live lower class lives. Mainting a modest life is hardly the case, its more like trying to live everyday. Not a lot of kids have the opportunity growing up in the phils going to school so they end up hanging out in places such as pool halls 24/7. Your world beaters you see now are usually one of those kids. All they do is hang out and play pool 24/7. Whats crazier is that most of my cousins there who play pool ( REALLY good players ), laugh when they see me practice setting up shots for a couple hours. They just tell me, play an actual game.....THAT'S ur practice....friggin NUTS!

Way to go Shane McMinn! He is one bad up & comer!

I think Mike Deschaine was pretty salty too, he just took too many chances! Some of the big names like Archer, Varner were up there too, to recognize the Filipinos only is only looking one side of the coin.

However, I agree with the above Da Bank's statement:

"i don't think you are stumbling on anything that everyone doesn't already know.

Overall, I think Shane McMinn double dipping Gary Abood is something that will be talked about for a long time to come! Shane is a young gun with a lot to offer! We can only see what can come from Gabe and Scott Frost in the next few years as well! I'm betting it will be world dominance!
