Finding a game?

I played a lot when I was younger, I was never very good just enjoyed the game.

I have recently gotten back into the game, even bought my first cue. I'm terrible, but I found that I still enjoy playing.

My biggest problem is finding a game. I have thought:

Bar tourney: + cheap buy in, regular game, - playing on sketchy equipment and likely only getting one or two games in a night

League: + regular games, - can't figure out how to join a league, can one join as an individual, or do you have to have a team to join.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

i found that it is easier to make your own team and then find a place like a bar that needs a team or can take on an extra team. most have a night were they have not so good players and other nights with better players.. i just got a team to geather and am now trying to find a bar to shoot out of

How bout both? As for leagues, you can probably just ask the establishment about it and they will likely be able to get you in touch with the league operator who can certainly get you on a team or you could also just find out what nights they play and show up.

Have fun

Solid advice, if you know enough folks who are free....

If you are lucky enough to have a POOL ROOM near you, it is much more fun there. Valleys are not POOL TABLES.

Bar tournaments and leagues are generally held at the same locations, sketchy equipment just comes with the territory. Both are held more for entertainment and fun for the customers of the bar than for actual competition.

If you live in an area with a pool hall(s), you should frequent there instead of the bars. They usually have weekly tournaments and regulars who might be up for practice or cheap action. If you live in an area with only bars, you have to make due with what you've got.

First off, welcome to AZB, a great place to hang out, learn about pool, pool playing equipment, and upcoming events.
Speaking of upcoming events, be sure and sign up for next Thursday's field trip to the Westward Ho Museum, in Omaha, Nebraska. That place is chock full of memorabilia from bawdy houses of the old west. They have a condom there that was made out of a flour sack.

You just met the "Tramp!"

Guess I am 2nd. Welcome to AZ. Lot of fun, and if ya not careful; you'll learn a thing or 2 as well.
To answer your question: I'd say just go.Worry more about the quality of your stroke!
Join a team in league play. It's not quite like action, BUT it can get competitive,(esp when you match-up against someone close to your speed).

Tramp; ................ is there still room on that bus ?!? I never been 2 a HO Museum b-4 ! ;):D

Absolutely, Dunn, my friend. The more, the merrier.
Keep an eye on, pocket, though. You know how the new guys are.

You need to gamble.... Where do you play out of?

Omaha is a bit out of my way! Thanks though.

I'm in a similar situation. I used to play a lot during high school and had friends come to the house almost every day. We got decent. Now that I moved out of the parent's house I bought my own table but its been years since I've played its definitely more fun playing with others than by yourself. I'm in upstate South Carolina.

I wandered into a pool hall figuring to practice, randomly approached one guy for some games, and through him met tons of other players. Now I have like a half dozen regular buddies I can shoot with and another half dozen who I play less frequently.

Every player has his own circle of people they shoot with. Get in someone's circle and suddenly you have all the games you need.

What's a valley?

Valley is a brand of bar table (7' by 3-1/2'). They are made to withstand the punishment of bar patrons. They are not made for accurate and/or challenging pool, although many have been "refurbished" to be quite good and there is a cult of Valley fans.

Ah. I had some vision of it being a derogatory term for a bar table. Looks like I wasn't that far off the mark lol.

bdorman...Just FYI, Valley tables come in 7', 8' & 9' sizes...although more 7' tables are sold. Valley is owned by Brunswick.

So I tightened my belt, and went to a local pool hall to do a little practice. On my way out talked to the guy who worked there, and discovered, low and behold, they have league play several evenings a week. Joining seems like a piece of cake too.

Appreciate all of the advice.
