Finding Quarter Ball (A / C in CTE)

Doublecheck something. Compare your tapeline to an actual ruler. Are they the same? I used a tailor's type tape measure a few times and something didn't look right. Turns out the tape measure (fabric?) had stretched and was no longer accurate. Just saying its something to look out for if you haven't already confirmed that it is good.

It's a new Stanley metal tapeline. It's weird, measuring around the circumference the length of the stripe is very near 1 1/8. But that's not how two quarters should be measured.

There's no way the straight on view of the stripe, in comparison to the diameter of the ball, can be bigger than the actual arc measurement on the ball. It must be a camera illusion.
The picture's a little misleading because the quarters are spaced according to the width of the pictured ball, but because of 3D perspective, the stripe's width in the middle/foreground of the picture is out of proportion with the ball's width farther back - i.e., it looks wider than it is. I mentioned this to explain why the stripe appears to be as wide as (maybe slightly wider than) the quarter marks.

That’s why you check all of them and can the ones that are off.

Same I cant do this with another guys benders without checking their take off compared to mine... tapes even fatmaxes go off....

And if you have any dummy tapes throw dat in the trash

You mentioned it, but it went right over my head. Lol.

I don't think it matters whether the quarters we visualize are exactly quarters or not, as long as we visualize them consistently. As long as they're always in the same wrong places they can be consistently associated with specific "reference" cut angles to help gauge other angles.

And I think that's a great way to look at it.

I agree it’s sort of like building a house with a tape measure that’s off....but if you only use that one, everything will be all good.

By the way, I think this perspective effect must also happen in real life, not just in the picture. So the Centennial ball's stripe actually appears slightly wider than its actual 1 1/16" - very close to if not exactly on the quarters of the ball.

Cool.

lol

I'm betting everybody's tape is off and we all just make do.

If one has never used one nor been trained as a measuring master.....they are definitely off. Same as seeing plumb or square, Ed. But that’s semantics and you are right Pat.

When I sling stick it’s quick and fits to a 32nd but there’s a lot of repetition and observation there too....

I do some strange things and observing with my eyes when I do panel installs offshore, it’s not unlike how I look at the balls in pool....lots of “see through”

But it’s just like the game the guys that suck at fitting pipe and tubing generally just have a really gaffed up measuring and prebending routine lol....it’s easy like 9 ball patterns or something, I rather one hole and compressor engine panels....most can’t take it in it’s too much in their face too many decisions.....but again baby steps, observe and practice accordingly. For bad routines never helped no one become better at anything....well unless the goal is to be all but good 🤦*♂️

Lemme guess. That thing spits out a stick of gum that tastes like an entire dinner, right?

What is it, for real?

Lol it’s the inside of a process controls panel for an oil and gas production facility in the Gulf of Mexico.....matter of fact I have installed and built a lot of that for this chithole over the years.....I’m on it as I type....laughing at the idiots who can’t flow their new well because they forgot to run power to the scada system......told them to let me hook her up as a dual system pneumatic and they could side control with the scada.....I mean what if you don’t have power? Oops guess they know now!

LOL That's awesome! I almost took an engineering job at Exxon working offshore. Sometimes I think I should have taken the job for the experience. That particular rig looks like its held together with duct tape.

That’s actually just birdshit Holding the jacket together lmao

AH, nothing like pneumatics. Nice looking control panel. Brings back a lot of memories. :)
