Finish on a Huebler custom shop.

Just wondering why or whats causing the finish on my Huebler custom shop to crackle and spiral like this. The cue is almost like it was when it came out of the custom shop. It still has the original tips everything. Probably hasnt seen 8 hours of play in 16 years. I keep it in the house and in a case and i shot with it few months ago for few hours and after that it starting cracking bad. You cant feel the cracks its not even to the surface. I was thinking about getting it refinished some day. But was wondering if it will hurt the value. But then again if i decided to sell it would the crackling hurt the value.

It was finished with "Lacquer" which never stops curing. It gets harder and harder with age and also shrinks a bit eventually.You see this quite often on vintage or antique furniture, cues, guitars, etc...My 1973 Gibson L6S looks just like that, and as you mentioned about you're cue, you can see it but not feel it.
 
Thank Jayman, That's cool to know, I wonder if he used a different finish on his regular cues. Ive seen a lot of old non custom shop hueblers and never seen them crackled like this.

I have a very early Huebler that he used an oil finish on. It has a more satin look to it rather than being glossy. It is probably a tung oil finish on mine.
I'm sure he must have experimented with many products over the years.
 
No problem Ryan, I will definitely let ya know when i decide to get it refinished! You have to do me a good price now.:thumbup:

Paul used a Lacquer Finish on most of his cues the biggest disadvantage is that all of older cues have Yellowed over time.
 
Yeah, you definitely can tell on the shaft that has crackled it is real yellow but on the other you cant tell much. Thanks Craig
 
yea S&K just refinished my old ebony 4pt 4veneer and i didn't even know the cue could look that good. It just had a wax coat, before that the finish was really yellowed and had started to desintegrate some how in an old case so I stripped it. I'll try and take some pics when I get home but it turned out fantastic.
