Fireworks at the US Open

And who kicked him out of the tournament??

From www.nielsfeijen.nl

First one was against Strickland and have to be honoust, I had nightmares from the verbal humiliation he put on me in the 10-11 match in 2001 to get to the last 4. I didn't stand up for myself then but I've matured a lot now as a player and as a person and I wasn't planning to take any shit from him this set. He got up 0-3 and then I started playing making very few mistakes and jumping in 2 shots and a final win of 11-8. In the set he said "good shooting" three times in a row at one point, forcing me to say thank you to the guy..unbelieveble. We got in a mini debat over that and after that he started mouthing to the crowd again but nothing too offensive, just about jump-cues. After the match though I was walking in front of him and he almost shouted "I got beat by the jump stick" and said I shouldn't use it. I told him I have a different opinion and that I would feel the same way if I just lost and then walked away cause it's hopeless with that guy

Earl vs JR Calvert

Interesting story coming out of the US Open today.

There was a verbal exchange between Earl and Sally with Inside Pool magazine. I understand the exchange was fairly one sided with Earl doing most of the talking. Before long, JR entered into the conversation and the volume level raised by a few notches.

Not sure what all the comments were between JR and Earl, but it ended with both of them lunging at each other and Scott Smith having to separate them. As JR was leaving the room, he reportedly yelled back at Earl something about him 'watching his back'.

I am sure we havn't heard the last of this one.

I was sitting 10 feet from Earl Strickland when the controversy between Earl and Sally started. Earl was playing Bobby Pickle on the corner table and he was ahead in the match or at least even when he glanced into the crowd and saw Sally taking notes on his match. Apparently Inside Pool Mag. had printed something about Earl that he didn't like and he didn't want Sally watching his match. He called out to her in the crowd and asked her "Why are you watching my match? There are plenty of other matches going on that you can watch besides mine. Everytime you people print something about me you twist it around and it doesn't come out like it really happened. I know that you are just waiting for me to say something so you can turn it around on me. Go watch somebody else play." Sally never said a word to Earl, but JR Calvert heard the comotion and he charged into the middle of it and told Earl if he had anything to say to say it to him. Earl responded to JR and JR acted like he was going to go onto the playing area after Earl and Bobby Pickle grabbed JR just as Scott Smith arrived on the scene. There was some shouting between them and that was it. Sally remained there taking notes on Earl's match.
I don't want to defend Earl, but if they did print an article or articles that he thought wasn't the truth then maybe he had a valid complaint. I don't know for sure. I witnessed the whole thing because i watched that entire match.

There was also a third guy who got involved on Earl's side towards the end. He and JR had words and then later he went over to Sally in the stands and appeared to be berating her. He sent Sally scurrying out of the stands and i never saw her say a word to him. Later he appeared to seek out JR and give him more. He wouldnt let it go.

I dont know who he was but he was a middle aged bald guy with a black moustache that i have seen at the Open many times. He is Kinda a down sized version of Ed Matushanock

Even if he disagreed with someone, to make a BIG scene and berate a person like that shows >me< that he's got no class.

Even if they printed something about him that he didn't like. There is a better way to approach the situation. Earl didn't have to publicly berate Sally. All he did was affirm my opinion of him.

Earl is amazing-He acts like a total jackass in most every match and then he is shocked and outraged when they report it. IM glad he apologized to JR at least. Other than the Mikala flower thing, i never thought he realized he was ever wrong!

Nostroke,

No one is more blind than one who refuses to see. Please excuse my poor paraphrase. As long as the billiard world allows Earl to act in his manner, he will continue. If Mr Riches were to delete him from the American Mosconi Cup team, Earl might open his eyes. If he is told by the hall of fame electing committee that he will never be elected, perhaps he will open his eyes. If Earl is banned from the US Open and all the major non UPA events, maybe, just maybe, Earl will listen and learn. Only Earl can decide to modify Earl's attitude. He is a great person as well as a great player. People will see it, if he would only let them.

Earls antics will catch up with him sooner or later, he's shooting himself in the foot.

There's an old saying, "Don't pick a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel"

He might have had a valid complaint? IF they had printed something that was not true then his complaint should have been lodged outside of the tournament venue. As is a letter to the editor, that is if Earl can write, or a letter from Earl's attorney if he felt that there was some form of libel. In any case though he has no right to accost a reporter in the stands who is taking notes and in no way interacting with him.

What is Inside Pool going to report now? Earl Strickland - Sexist, Racist and Against Free Speech. The Pearl accosts reporter in one of his many Sean Penn moments. "Don't write about me" he shouts, "I am just misunderstood."

This reminds me of a story that Ralf Souquet told me about when he and Earl were playing each other in the Challenge of Champions. Earl was shooting, facing away from Ralf and he says to Ralf, "quit moving Ralf." Now, if any of you know Ralf Souquet then you know that he is one of the most stoic players ever. This is why this story ALWAYS gets a laugh at Earl's expense when told among professional pool players.

Gotta love the guy. He is what he is. A topic of discussion. Watch out AZ Billiard Forum members, Earl will be stalking you next for writing about him :-))

You may be laughing for the wrong reason. If Earl was facing away from Ralf and said "Quit moving Ralf" everyone in the place had to see that Earl can't see Ralf so he must have been joking. I don't see the laugh "at Earl's expense" here and im no Earl fan by a long shot. Or maybe i just misunderstood

This reminded me of a story from the Turning Stone Casino Classic two years ago. Earl was playing golf with a friend of mine. My friend was directly behind him about twenty feet and to the left at the edge of the green. Earl missed his put. He turned to my friend and said "I could see you moving while I was putting". Perhaps this is Earl's real problem now. He has 360 degree vision. That's why he wears those glasses!

According to Ralf, Earl meant it seriously as it went along with the other snide comments that Earl made that day. This is WHY it gets such a laugh from other Pro players, because they KNOW that Earl was being serious and THAT is what is so funny.

Ask Smorg about Earl's behavior in one of his tournaments at Planet Nine Ball if you don't believe that this guy is an anal retentive nutcase.

John

John,

Earl played in two of our local Joss stops. He won them both. Based on some of his actions here, I can imagine the story. If I am lucky enough to meet smorg, I'll be sure to ask him. Thanks.

Oh i know he is nutty- I have seen him plenty of times. He is also nutty enough to do what i said. Not saying he did but I have seen him be a total dick to his opponent then in a flash do a 180, turn good natured and start applauding his opponent at every chance. Then after losing, congratulate him graciously.
