So when did jump cues start...I always heard it was sammy jones that started it and that Meucci was the first company to manufacture jump cues. Albeit being probably the worst jump cue I've ever used a Meucci was the first I ever saw.

1st I remember seeing was the Frog, Robin Doddson endorced it. It was at least 10 years ago. Although the cues only recently got popular, seems last couple of years everyone from your low APA player to top pros have them.

Sammy was one of the first to jump balls, as I recall, but using a shaft, not a jump cue. I don't remember Meucci making jump cues.

Although I lose many brain cells every day that is also my recollection. As I remember it had points and it was made in the late 80's. It only came as a jump butt with a Meucci joint so any standard Meucci shaft could be used. Although SJ was the defacto jumper of the day with the short cue I can also recall Earl jumping with a full cue.

Yeh. Meucci made just the jump butts, but they really weren't anything special. I remember around 91 seeing a jump butt that paul mottey had made as well. Joss also made jump cue butts with the "joss" lettering on the side.

I remember in the early 90s I had a "rod" style jump cue.

Roughly 30" long, 18mm around with a big phenolic tip.

The one I had was actually made by Joe porper (porcupine jumper) and was ridiculously easy to use.

I read somewhere that Willie Hoppie jumped the hell out of balls. There is a book that tells of one of his trick shots being a jump shot. It says that he would place a wine glass on a table with a ball in it's mouth and jump a CB up hit the ball out of the wine glass and replace it with the CB. Well I think he would of had to use a smaller and lighter cue to achieve it. Unless he scooped it.

I have a video of Willie Mosconi and Jimmi Carris jumping shots and Willie is about 21-25. They knew about using little cues. Both men learning a few tricks from Charlie Petterson who is another I'll bet knew about it pre 1900. I think Victor Stein (spelling is bad...) or Charlie Ursitti would know the answer. Probably tell you the exact date.

Which Sammy???

I'll bet that it dates back to when we starting playing with cue's instead of billes, I'll bet some could with a bille. The first jump was probably in the late 1500s or early 1600s. My guess is that the first jump cue was made on accident in the 1800s.

I think Pat Fleming was credited with the first jump cue. John Barton may have something good to add here, as he's probably one of the best resources regarding jump cues in the world, let alone this board.

Marcus Collier, the greatest Bumper Pool player that ever lived, use to carry a bumper pool cue with him for jumping balls on the pool table back in the early 1970s. This idea stuck in the minds of a few people and one of them decided to put a larger tip on it and sell it as a jump cue. TRIH..............................$Bill

I still have one of the Joss jump butts. Unfortunately I can't use it because the cue with shaft is only 39 inches long......:(

This is correct. Sammy was jumping balls VERY effectively with a shaft in the mid 80's. It all came about after Earl jumped a ball on TV. He was using his regular playing cue, but it created an interest in the possibility of jumping balls, rather than kicking at them.

Sure put a crimp in Efren's game, since he was the master of the kick shot.

I think it was pretty much Pat Fleming that got Meucci and Joss into building jumping cues. Of course the best authority on why and when they did them would be themselves.

I was making my own jump handles in 1989. The first time I ever saw a jump cue that resembled what we have today was when a guy in Germany made a handle out of steel to attach to a shaft. This was circa 1991.

Then the next ones I saw were the ones by Hans Joerg Bertram, the father of the Bunjee style jump cue. These were copied by Oliver Stops who made plastic handles. The entire cue was shorter than a shaft. Circa 1992. At this point there were jump cues that consisted of normal shafts and lightweight handles, and jump cues with 15mm phenolic tips. I remember the jump rod made of aluminum and Eddie's 747 made of wood as two examples of the rod variety.

The Bunjee style evolved out the wedge style from HJ Bertram. It was lengthened to 41" to satisy the WPA rules. I did this after seeing another cue enjoy success for a few years, the Happy Hopper sold by Dr. Cue. It seemed that by 1997 there were many jump cue brands on the market with some variance but not much difference in their performance.

For your information here is a picture of the Meucci's jump cues. I remember I saw some around 1990. In the pool room I was playing, a girl in weelchair was also using one to play.
